I’ve spent a long time reading organizations. You do it long enough and you can’t shut it off, and after a while it stops being about companies at all. You also start reading people the same way.

Two men walk in with the same numbers on the same chart, and you already know the numbers aren’t what decides anything.

So imagine two men.

Same age. Both carrying a little too much weight. Both pre-diabetic. Both married, both fathers, both raised in homes that left a mark they never quite set down. Both in church every week. Both with habits they know, in the quiet part of themselves, are killing them slow. Both an example to their kids, whether they meant to be or not. Both got to the place where they needed help from outside, and not one friend or family member had loved them enough to say so out loud. Both scared.

Call one Oscar. Call the other James.

Here is the one difference that matters. Oscar loves to learn. He is a skeptic. He checks everything. He reads.

James follows the crowd. All in on the jersey Sunday afternoon, all in on the singing and the tithe Sunday morning. A systems guy. He trusts the system to be the system, and he lets it carry him.

Both men get the wake-up call. Both men get scared. Both men need help. That part is identical. Nothing separates them yet.

James makes the appointment. The doctor tells him he is a type 2 diabetic and hands him the prescription the same morning. James drives to Costco, fills it, and tells himself he’ll cut back on a few things. He does what he was told. That is the whole shape of James. He does what he was told.

Oscar goes to the doctor too, because that is what you do, that is normal. But when the doctor says take these pills, Oscar says thank you, drives home, and opens his laptop. He checks one source against another against a third. He makes a decision nobody prescribed. The next morning he is up before the house, out the door, walking. That week he opens his own refrigerator and throws half of it out. He learns what fasting actually does to a body. He learns what his body was built to run on in the first place. He gets a little stronger every day. He stumbles. He gets back up. The one thing he refuses to do is stay the same.

Now run it forward ten years.

James is still heavy. Still on the couch Sunday afternoon. Heavier, if anything. The medication got adjusted up twice. He calls it managing the condition. What he is managing is the decline. He found a way to make his body comfortable inside the sickness, and he calls that living.

Oscar is lean. Not just thinner. Well. And it did not stop at his body. His marriage came back. His kids eat different now, move different, carry themselves different, and they are going to hand that down to children Oscar has not met yet. He did not just heal himself. He turned his entire bloodline. Even a few neighbors started to join him on his morning walks and his weekend healthy barbecues.

Same two men. Same childhood weight on both of them. Same diagnosis, same recommendation, from the same institution everybody in the waiting room agrees is normal.

One handed his body to the system and asked the system to carry him. The other one picked his body up and carried it himself.

One took the pill. One did the work. One stayed comforted. One got well.

You already know this was never about a doctor.

There is a whole religion built on James. It found out it was sick and it reached for the pill. It calls the pill grace, swallows it every Sunday, and never once turns around. It was handed the oldest set of instructions there is, the actual design, how a covenant life was built from the beginning to run, and it decided the instructions were obsolete. Because the pill is easier. Because the doctor is kind. Because the waiting room has big screens on every wall, a sound system you can feel in your chest, and a live band on the weekend, and nobody in a room that comfortable is in a hurry to leave it.

Because everyone in the waiting room is reaching for the same bottle, and it is a lonely thing to be the only man who drove home and opened his laptop.

Turning around has a name. The old word is teshuvah (turning, returning, walking back the other way). It is the entire distance between these two men. James was told to change and found something that let him not change.

Oscar changed. He found the old instructions, the real ones, the lessons about how the thing was actually built to run, and he loved them. He did not just follow them, he held fast to them. That is all teshuvah is. You stop, you turn, you walk the hard direction, and you do it again tomorrow.

The doctor, the medical system, never told Oscar to heal. He told him to manage. What the doctor wanted was the next visit, the one he could bill for, and the one after that. A healed man does not come back. Oscar healed anyway.

The saddest part is not James on the couch. It is that James feels sorry for Oscar. All that discipline. All those rules. All that food he won’t touch and all those cold mornings he gets up for.

James looks at the one man who actually got well and calls it bondage.

Calls it works. Calls it missing the point of the whole thing. And he says it with a heart medication in his hand and ten years of decline behind him, certain the entire time that he is the free one.

Read that back, and decide which man is actually healthy, actually free and actually made whole | “saved”.

It’s early. Coffee’s hot, house is quiet, and I’m sitting here doing the thing I always do before the day starts. Turning something over. Looking for the picture that makes things click.

I’ve spent more than 20 years consulting for companies. Fortune 500 names you’d know and startups you never heard of and everything in between. And somewhere in all of that I built a habit I can’t shut off. I see an organization, and I immediately start reading it.

How’s it structured. Who actually runs it. Does the thing on the wall match the thing on the floor. You do it long enough and it becomes a sense, like a mechanic hearing an engine and knowing what’s wrong before he opens the hood.

So this morning I’m drinking my coffee and I’m thinking about Christianity. Not the faith. The operation. The way it actually runs out there in the real world. And I keep landing on the same uncomfortable place.

I have never once seen a real company survive running the way modern Christianity runs. Not a single one. It would not last. The model would collapse inside a year, and any consultant worth his rate would tell you exactly why on day one.

So let me show you the company. Let me build it in front of you, piece by piece, the way I’d walk a client through their own org chart. And somewhere in the middle of it, I think you’re going to recognize where we are.

Imagine a company.

The founder built it from the ground up. He built a lot of things in his life, but this one he built with his own two hands. Every training session, recorded. Every procedure, his. It was new, so the original staff made mistakes. A lot of them. That’s how it goes when something’s just getting started.

Years pass. The founder’s still active, still very much alive, just moved to oversight now. He watches. And his son comes up through the company from the bottom. Starts on the floor like everyone else. The perfect example. Does it all exactly the way the father laid it out, to the letter.

But management got to the operation first.

They took what the father built and made it a fortress. Strict. So strict nobody could keep the standard, and that was the point. They built a ranking on top of it, tiers, who’s in and who’s out, an inner circle the father never asked for. He never wanted a hierarchy. He wanted a staff who knew how to make the thing run. Relationships over rules. The father’s whole plan was relationship, and they turned it into a rulebook so heavy nobody could lift it. Open door policy? Gone. You needed an appointment and a title now.

So the son does what a son does. He corrects them. Points to the recordings, points to the original manual, says this isn’t it, this was never it.

They fire him.

And on his way out he doesn’t go quiet. He tells the whole staff. They restructured my father’s business. Buried it in their own rules, their own tiers, their own inner circle. This isn’t what he built. So I’m restoring it, to his terms, the original terms, the way it was supposed to run. Stay or go, that’s on you. But if you stay with me, you get what the father actually promised. The retirement. The benefits. The open door.

Some stayed with management. Some saw it and followed the son, who turned out to be the real boss the whole time. Undercover the entire time, funny enough. And working for him had a homeliness to it. He didn’t write anything new. He showed them the father’s ordinances, the layout, the plan, the originals, and he ran it to a T, exactly as written, nothing added and nothing shaved off. He put it back the way it was always meant to be. And they loved it. It worked. It was never heavy. The yoke was light because it was the right yoke.

Now there was a senior executive. A guy named Paul. Best-trained man in the entire company. Doctorate from the top school in the country, top of his class, credentialed past anybody. He came up inside the strict firm, the strictest of the strict, and he was the best there ever was at it. And he saw it. Saw the son was the real boss, saw what management had done to the place. So he left. Walked out of the corner office and said the founder never wanted this thing locked up for the inner circle. He built it for anybody. And there’s a whole world out there that’s never even heard the company name.

So Paul goes out to them. The ones with no history here, no badge, no training, nothing. And he brings them in. Same manual. Same ordinances. Same founder, same son, same terms. He didn’t write a new company either. He carried the existing one, the restored one, to people who’d never been told it was for them. The door the father always wanted open, Paul walked through it and waved the outsiders in.

That was the founder’s heart the whole time. Available to anybody. Paul just believed him.

Now there was a bigger competitor out there. The kind that ruled by force. Everything they ran, they ran by power, compliance, do it or else, that was the only language they knew. And they watched this little company. They saw the affection in it. They saw people who actually wanted to be there, wanted to belong to it, wanted to obey because they loved the thing, not because they were made to. And the competitor wanted that. You can’t buy that. You can’t threaten it into people. So instead of joining it, they took it in. Absorbed it. Did a full rebrand, slapped their own colors on it, and stood themselves up as the first real competitor to the original. And they tried to shut the original down. Abolish it. Say the old company doesn’t exist anymore, we’re what it became.

And here’s the strange part. The founder let it happen.

Because the founder knew something the competitor never could. You cannot force this. A company ruled by force only ever produces performers. People who clock in, hit the marks, put on the face, and feel nothing. And that was never what he wanted. He never wanted performance. He wanted sincerity. A real heart change, the kind that makes somebody a true employee, not an actor collecting on a role. So he let the counterfeit run loud out front, and the real thing stayed on the side. Quiet. Small. Still building. Still restoring. Because the ones who found it there wanted to be there, and that was the only kind of employee the founder ever cared about.

Then out of that rebrand came the franchisees.

Oh man, we want in on this. This is beautiful. You mess up, you’re forgiven. You get the retirement, the benefits, the whole package. Gorgeous. But here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re not actually gonna do the work. We’ll take the name, we’ll take the logo, we’ll take the retirement plan, and we’ll open our own locations. Same CEO on the sign. Same founder’s name over the door. Just no manual. No ordinances. No adherence, no obedience. We come in, we play all day, and we collect.

And the managers they hire, they’re the exact opposite of the old crew. Remember the fortress guys, the strict ones, the rankings and the appointments? These new ones are the flip side of the same coin. They’re fun. They sing. They’re funny, they put on a show, and every week the employees can’t wait to come hang out. Best hour of the week. Nobody’s ever uncomfortable, nobody’s ever corrected, nobody’s ever refined. You come, you feel good, you leave exactly the way you walked in. Year after year.

And in all that time, they never actually meet the founder. They never learn the manual. They just see his picture on the wall and wave at it. That’s the relationship. A photo and a good feeling.

Now sit with this for a minute. The old management was strict but at least the paycheck was real. These franchises? The employees pay to work there.

Unauthorized franchises. The CEO never signed off. The founder never sent them. They printed his name on a storefront he never built and kept every benefit while throwing out every instruction. Grace with the register still open and the work floor empty.

And that’s the tell, if you’re paying attention. Watch how each side fills a room.

One side has to recruit. They need the environment, the lights, the sound, the personality up front working the crowd. They need the show to bring people in and the show to keep them, because take the music away and there’s nothing holding anybody there. The draw is the production. It has to be, because there’s no operations manual underneath it.

The other side doesn’t recruit at all. Doesn’t have to. People just watch how those employees live. How they carry themselves, how they treat each other, what they do when nobody’s clocking them. They see somebody different and they want to know why.

No stage. No sound system. No personality out front closing the deal. Just a life that looks like it came from somewhere real, and people walk toward it on their own.

One draws with the room. The other draws with the fruit.

They’ll tell you the son sent them.

He didn’t.

P.S. Here’s the irony.

The franchise employees make fun of the original staff. The ones who’ve been there since the founder had his sleeves rolled up building the thing. They mock them for their dedication. For actually following the manual. For caring about the ordinances nobody else reads anymore. Backwards, they call it. Stuck. Didn’t get the memo.

And they say it with total confidence, because somewhere along the way they got told the original staff was let go. Replaced. Written out of the founder’s heart, made obsolete by the new model.

Except the original staff was in the room when he built it. They ran the first shift. Their names are on the founding paperwork. The founder never fired them, never replaced them, never said one word about writing them off. That’s a story the franchises tell about people they’ve never worked a day beside.

So you’ve got employees who pay to play, who never learned the manual, who never met the founder, laughing at the ones who were there at the beginning and never left. Mocking the veterans for still doing the job the way the founder himself trained them to do it.

Read that back and sit with who’s actually laughing at who.

It Was One Thing the Whole Time
A word before you read it.

I wanted to write you before you read it. Not the announcement. Just you, and the thing standing behind it.

When you read Scripture with the Hebrew in view, things start to connect. Not because you force them. Because they were always connected, and the language you were reading in kept the seam hidden.

I cannot fully tell you what that does to a person. We spent years thinking separately. Old against new, Hebrew against Greek, the Bible a pile of separate stories, separate rules, separate books held together by nothing but a binding. But it is all fluid. You go back to the tongue it was born in, and the seams completely disappear. It was one thing the whole time. One voice. One thread running the entire length of it.

This one came out of a connection like that. It clicked mid-study, quiet and sideways, the way those things always do. So I went looking for who had said it first, because surely someone had. The book. The paper. The teacher who got there before me.

They were not there, close but not there. I looked hard.

So I wrote the thing I could not find. But do not hear me wrong. I did not make the connection. I could not have. It was already there, older than me, older than the translation that buried it. All I ever did was stop reading someone else’s English and go look for myself, I was Berean.

And I am excited to share with you how beautifully these pieces fit for me. That is what this one is. Not a lecture. Just me, showing you the seam where they finally came together.

Here is my honest guess at how it lands, and I am telling you because you will read it honest. My Jewish brothers and sisters are going to feel that quiet inside glow. Those who sit with the Hebrew will feel a light come on somewhere in the middle. And if you have only ever read the tomb through a Greek lens, you may finish it puzzled. Not because anything is wrong. Because it rests on a foundation nobody handed you.

There is a verse the majority of Acts 15 sermons intentionally skip.

The popular reading goes like this: the Jerusalem Council met, the apostles debated whether Gentile believers needed to keep the Torah, the apostles ruled that they did not, and Western Christianity has operated ever since on the assumption that Acts 15 retired Moshe [Moses]. The law was for the Jews. Grace is for us. Move on.

The reading is tidy. It also requires skipping Acts 15:21.

Ya’akov [James], who chaired the council and delivered the verdict, closed his ruling with a single sentence the Western reading almost never quotes. After listing his four prohibitions, he said this:

“For from the earliest times, Moshe has had in every city those who proclaim him, with his words being read in the synagogues every Shabbat.”

Acts 15:21 (CJB)

Ya’akov assumed the new Gentile believers would be in synagogue every Sabbath hearing Moshe read. That was his explicit logic for not loading them with the full weight of Torah at the door. They would learn it. Every Sabbath. In every city. The synagogue would be their continuing classroom and Torah would be their continuing curriculum.

If Acts 15 retired Torah, Acts 15:21 makes no sense. Ya’akov is not closing a book. He is handing out a syllabus.

The Question That Brought the Council Together

Acts 15 was not a referendum on Torah. It was a referendum on circumcision as an entrance rite.

Read the opening (Acts 15:1, CJB): “But some men came down from Y’hudah to Antioch and began teaching the brothers, ‘You can’t be saved unless you undergo b’rit-milah in the manner prescribed by Moshe.’”

That is the question on the table. Salvation contingent on a Gentile male becoming a circumcised proselyte. That is what Sha’ul [Paul] and Bar-Naba [Barnabas] disputed. That is what the council was called to settle.

Kefa [Peter] addressed it first (Acts 15:7-11): the Father gave the Ruach HaKodesh [Holy Spirit] to Gentiles already, cleansing their hearts by trust, with no circumcision required. Sha’ul and Bar-Naba reported the same. Then Ya’akov ruled.

The verdict (Acts 15:19-20, CJB): “Therefore, my opinion is that we should not put obstacles in the way of the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead, we should write them a letter telling them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from fornication, from what is strangled and from blood.”

Notice what the ruling actually does. It removes one obstacle: forced circumcision as the price of salvation. It adds four minimums for table fellowship. That is the entire scope of the verdict.

Nowhere in Acts 15 do the apostles say Torah is annulled. Nowhere do they say the dietary code is dead. Nowhere do they say the Sabbath is moved. Nowhere do they say the moral framework of the Tanakh [Hebrew Bible] is set aside. They ruled on one question: must a Gentile become a circumcised Jew to be saved? Their answer was no. Salvation is by trust in Yeshua HaMashiach [Jesus the Messiah]. The door is open.

The Four Prohibitions Are Not the Whole House

The four items Ya’akov names are the minimums for Gentile believers to enter Jewish-Gentile table fellowship without scandal. Pollutions of idols (food offered in pagan rites). Fornication (the moral baseline of any Torah-shaped community). Things strangled (meat not properly drained). Blood (the prohibition that runs all the way back to Bereshit [Genesis] 9 and the covenant with Noach [Noah]).

These are not the complete shape of the Torah-shaped life. They are the floor. The four conditions under which a Gentile believer could sit at table with a Jewish believer without forcing the Jewish believer to violate his own conscience. They open the door. They are not the whole house.

And then Ya’akov says it: Moshe is read in every city every Sabbath. They will learn the rest. The synagogue is their school. The Torah is their continuing curriculum. Acts 15:21 is not a throwaway footnote. It is the closing logic of the entire ruling.

What Sha’ul Actually Said

Sha’ul gets enlisted to argue against Torah more than any other figure in the Brit Chadashah [New Testament]. Read his actual letters.

Romans 3:31 (CJB): “Does it follow that we abolish Torah by this trusting? Heaven forbid. On the contrary, we confirm Torah.”

Romans 7:12 (CJB): “So the Torah is holy; that is, the commandment is holy, just and good.”

Romans 7:14 (CJB): “For we know that the Torah is of the Spirit.”

Romans 8:4 (CJB): “the just requirement of the Torah might be fulfilled in us who do not run our lives according to what our old nature wants but according to what the Spirit wants.”

The same Sha’ul who told the Galatian church not to be circumcised for salvation kept his Nazirite vow in Acts 21, declared in Acts 24:14 that he believed everything written in the Torah and the Prophets, and stated in Acts 25:8 that he had committed no offense against the Torah of the Jews. The man Western readers cite as the abolisher of Torah was a Torah-keeping Pharisaic Jew who never stopped being one. He opposed Torah as the entrance ticket. He never opposed Torah as the walk.

What Yeshua Actually Said

Mattityahu [Matthew] 5:17-19 (CJB): “Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish but to complete. Yes indeed. I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah, not until everything that must happen has happened. So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Yochanan [John] 14:15: “If you love me, you will keep my commands.”

Yochanan 15:10: “If you keep my commands, you will stay in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and stay in his love.”

Yeshua kept Torah. He told His followers to keep Torah. He tied love for Him to keeping His commands, which were the Father’s commands. Not a new set. The same set He had kept Himself.

The yud is the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet. The smallest stroke is the smallest mark on a letter. Yeshua set the bar as low as a typographic detail and said even that will stand until heaven and earth pass away. Heaven and earth have not passed away.

An Honest Question

I want to ask my Christian brothers and sisters something direct, in love and on the record.

What is more important to you: what you have been taught, or what the Bible actually says?

Most Western Christians have inherited a teaching about Acts 15, Sha’ul, and the Torah that does not survive the verses cited above. The teaching is so embedded that the verses sound foreign when read straight. Ya’akov saying “Moshe is read every Sabbath” sounds odd. Yeshua saying “not a yud will pass” sounds odd. Sha’ul saying “we confirm Torah” sounds odd. The verses are clear. The teaching has trained you to find them strange.

Here is the next question.

Do you really believe the God of the universe gave instructions to His people that He did not want them to follow? That He revealed His holy character through Vayikra [Leviticus] and Devarim [Deuteronomy], called the resulting form of life good, and then later decided He preferred His children unmoored from it? The Father whose own words in Devarim 30 tie keeping His mitzvot [commandments] to life itself did not change His mind about whether obedience blesses His children.

Obedience is a two-way street. It honors Him because He is worthy. It serves us because He knows what is good for us. Both are true at once. The Western frame splits them and makes obedience sound like weight and grace sound like relief from the weight. The Hebrew Bible never accepted that split.

Now the real question that consequences.

I have heard so many Christians say “the law is gone.”

Ok, but… If the law is gone, what is it exactly you are obedient to?

You are obedient to something. No one walks through life unbound. If it is not Torah, it is denominational tradition. It is your pastor’s interpretive framework. It is the cultural Christianity of the room you grew up in. It is someone’s reading of a handful of favorite Pauline phrases pulled out of their Pharisaic-Jewish context. Something is shaping your eating, your calendar, your sex, your money, your speech, your rest. The question is not whether you live under a form. The question is whose form, given by whom, for what end.

“The law is gone” does not produce freedom. It produces a vacuum. The vacuum fills with whatever framework the local church culture happens to provide. That is not grace. That is exchange. You traded Sinai for a stack of unstated assumptions held by people who told you Sinai was no longer the point.

Acts 15 never asked whether the Father’s instructions still defined His household. It assumed they did. It only argued who could come in, and on what terms. Inside the house, Torah continued to shape the family. The wall between you and the household’s actual way of living was not built by the apostles. It was built later, by people who needed Sinai to be gone so their replacement framework could stand in its place.

So which is more important to you. What you have been taught, or what the Bible actually says.

The Lifestyle of the Rescued

Here is where the Hebraic frame actually goes.

A child in his father’s house does not earn membership by obeying the house rules. He obeys the house rules because he lives there. The shape of life in the house was set by the father before the child was old enough to speak. The child walks it because it is the family’s way.

Torah is the form. The redeemed walk it not to earn the rescue but because the rescue brought them into the household where this is how the family lives. The dietary code, the calendar, the seventh-day rest, the love of neighbor, the welcome of the stranger, the care for the poor, the honor of parents, the holiness of the marriage bed. These are not the price of admission. They are the family’s way of living.

Vayikra [Leviticus] 11:44 (CJB): “I am Adonai your God; therefore, consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.”

That verse was never the door fee. It was given to a people HaShem [the Name] had already redeemed out of Egypt. He brought them out first. Then He told them how the redeemed live. The structure has not changed. Yeshua brought a wider table out of a wider Egypt. The redeemed at the wider table still live the family’s way.

Torah is the lifestyle of the rescued. The shape of life for people already set free. The natural walk of a child who simply delights to be near his Father and to live the way that pleases Him.

There is a figure in Shemot [Exodus] 21 that closes this whole question.

The Hebrew slave whose six years of service have ended. He has the legal right to walk away free. The Torah requires it. The master cannot hold him. But if he says ahavti et adoni (”I love my master”) and chooses to stay, the master brings him to the door, presses his ear against the doorpost, and pierces it with an awl. He becomes eved olam, a servant forever, by his own consent. Shemot 21:5-6.

Every detail of the picture is deliberate. The ear is the organ of shema, hearing and obeying. The doorpost is where the Father’s words are bound according to Devarim [Deuteronomy] 6:9, the mezuzah. The piercing leaves a permanent mark on the hearing organ at the threshold of the house. He is not branded as property. He is sealed as a son who loves the household.

That is the obedience the Father has always wanted. Not the obedience of someone who cannot leave. The obedience of someone who can leave and will not. Sha’ul opens his letter to Rome calling himself eved of Yeshua HaMashiach. Kefa does the same. Ya’akov does the same. They all took the posture of the willing slave at the doorpost. Ear pierced. By choice. For life.

The Western frame keeps asking whether the law is gone so the believer can be free. The Hebraic frame already answered. The free man chooses the household. He puts his ear to the door of the Father’s house and says, in love, I am staying.

Acts 15 settled the door. The Father set the house long before the door was opened wider.

If Acts 15 was about the door, what have you been keeping out of the house?

If Sha’ul confirmed Torah by trust, which Sha’ul have you been quoting?

If Yeshua said no yud would pass, what yud have you let pass?

If “be holy for I am holy” is the invitation into the family’s way of living, what part of the family’s way have you not yet tasted?

You have sung it a hundred times. Most of us learned it before we could have told you what a single line meant. It is one of the most beloved hymns in the English-speaking church, and it is sung in the first person, which means that every time the room sings it, you are not describing a doctrine. You are signing one. “All to Him I owe.” That is your mouth making a claim about your own debt and how it got settled.

So it is worth stopping the music for a moment and reading the contract.

I want to do that here in three passes, line by line. The first pass is psychological: what the song does to the person singing it, what it soothes, what it shapes. The second is covenantal: what story of God and Israel the words assume, and whether that story is the one Scripture actually tells. The third is the hardest: where the song’s central metaphor, payment, lines up with the text and where it quietly parts ways with it. The doctrine most people hear underneath this hymn is penal substitution, the teaching that God poured out on Yeshua (Jesus) the punishment your sins deserved, satisfying His own retributive justice. Whether the song teaches that, and whether Scripture does, is the question.

This is not an argument for singing it less. It is an argument for singing it awake.

The Refrain: “Jesus Paid It All, All to Him I Owe”

Start where the hymn itself keeps returning. The refrain is the thesis, and it is built entirely out of money.

Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.

What it does to you. A paid debt is one of the most relieving facts a human being can hold. We are wired for the closed account, the settled score, the green balance. There is real rest in “it is finished, and not by me.” But there is also a hidden cost in framing your standing with God as a ledger. A ledger keeps you a debtor even after it is paid. The posture it trains is gratitude shaped like obligation, the perpetual sense that you are in arrears and someone is covering for you. That can mature into love. It can also calcify into the anxious, performance-driven faith of a person who never feels out of the red. The metaphor comforts and quietly imprisons in the same breath.

The covenant underneath. Notice the song switches metaphors mid-refrain and nobody flinches. The first two lines are commercial: debt, payment, owing. The last two are not. “Crimson stain... washed white as snow” is a direct lift from Yeshayahu [Isaiah 1:18], and that is the language of purification (kapparah), not payment. Stains are washed; they are not paid off. The Hebrew imagination of atonement runs through cleansing, covering, and covenant, not through a cash register. When Scripture wants the picture of blood, it reaches for kapparah (atonement as covering and purgation) and for the cut covenant, karat brit, sealed in blood at Sinai. The refrain holds both a ledger and a laver, and only one of them is biblical.

The question the metaphor raises. “Paid it all” forces a question the hymn never answers and most singers never ask: paid to whom? A payment has a recipient. Penal substitution answers that the payment goes to the Father, to satisfy His justice and absorb His wrath. But the text never says the Father is paid. When the New Testament uses ransom language, “a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45), it never once names a payee. The metaphor of redemption is real, but it pictures rescue from bondage, not a receipt for a fine handed to an offended judge. Press “paid to whom” and penal substitution has to supply an answer the verses withhold. Where penal substitution does not fit the text is exactly this seam.

Verse 1: “Child of Weakness, Watch and Pray”

I hear the Savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small, Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all.”

What it does to you. This is the gentlest verse, and it is mostly healthy. “Your strength is small” is simply true, and naming it can free a person from the exhausting performance of self-sufficiency. Dependence rightly named is encouragement; dependence weaponized is discouragement. The difference is what comes after the diagnosis. Here the cure is “find in Me thine all in all,” which is communion, not condemnation. The verse points you toward sufficiency in Another, and it stops before it tells you that you are worthless. Hold that, because the third verse will not.

The covenant underneath. Torah does not address the human being as a contemptible weakling. It addresses a covenant partner, capable of na’aseh v’nishma, “we will do and we will hear.” “All in all” as a description of Messiah’s sufficiency is good and true. The thing to watch is whether sufficiency in Him is allowed to coexist with your real agency and obedience, or whether it is made to erase them. This verse leaves the door open. Keep an eye on which later verses try to close it.

The question the metaphor raises. There is no penal substitution here at all. This verse is about dependence and prayer, not penalty and payment. Worth saying plainly: the hymn is not uniformly wrong. Its first stanza is closer to the Hebrew posture of trust than the doctrine that will be read into its refrain.

Verse 2: “Change the Leper’s Spots, Melt the Heart of Stone”

Lord, now indeed I find Thy power, and Thine alone, Can change the leper’s spots And melt the heart of stone.

The covenant underneath. This verse is better than the doctrine it serves. “Melt the heart of stone” is Yechezkel [Ezekiel 36:26] almost verbatim: “I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” That is the new covenant promise, the Torah written on the heart (lev), the interior transformation God swore to do Himself. The leper cleansed and the stone heart softened are both healings. They are change, not merely verdict. The verse is reaching, almost without meaning to, for a covenant written inside the person.

What it does to you. People do not actually want only their debt paid. They want the leper’s spots gone. They want to stop being the person who keeps doing the thing. This verse names the deeper hunger that a pure payment model cannot satisfy: not just acquittal, but cure. It promises more than penal substitution can deliver, and the human heart knows the difference.

The question the metaphor raises. Here is the tension penal substitution carries and this verse exposes. PSA, especially in its Reformed form, rests on imputation: God credits Christ’s righteousness to you as a legal status while you remain, in yourself, unchanged. But verse two does not want a legal status. It wants the spots gone and the stone melted. The hymn’s own hope outruns the courtroom. The text agrees with the hymn, not the doctrine: the new covenant is transformation, not only a transfer of accounting.

Verse 3: “Nothing Good Have I”

For nothing good have I Whereby Thy grace to claim; I’ll wash my garments white In the blood of Calvary’s Lamb.

What it does to you. This is the verse to watch most closely, because this is where the Reformed anthropology slips in. “For nothing good have I” can be humility, or it can be self-contempt dressed as piety. That difference is everything. Humility says, “I cannot earn this.” Self-contempt says, “I am nothing,” and a person trained to believe they are nothing does not produce holy boldness; they produce either despair or a brittle, defended pride. Scripture’s word for unearned favor, chen, and its word for covenant loyalty, chesed, do not require you to first agree that you are worthless. They require you to agree that the relationship is His doing.

The covenant underneath. “The blood of Calvary’s Lamb” is Passover language, Pesach, not penal language. The blood of the first Passover in Shemot [Exodus 12] was not a payment of anyone’s penalty. It was a mark of belonging that the destroyer passed over. And the blood Yeshua named at His final seder was explicitly covenantal: “this is My blood of the covenant” (Matthew 26:28), an echo of Shemot [Exodus 24:8], where Moshe throws the blood of the covenant on the people. Blood in the Hebrew Bible carries life and seals covenant. It does not function as currency. The verse says “wash,” and washing is purification (kapparah), again, not payment.

The question the metaphor raises. “Nothing good whereby Thy grace to claim” runs the merit ledger to its end: you have no credit, so Another’s credit must be applied. That is the logic of imputation, and it is a courtroom logic. But the Lamb of the Exodus did not stand in a courtroom and absorb a sentence. The Hebrew verb for bearing sin, nasa, means to carry it away, as the scapegoat carried it into the wilderness on Yom Kippur, not to be punished in the sinner’s place. Carrying away and being punished instead are not the same act. The hymn says blood and Lamb; Scripture’s Lamb removes and cleanses. The penalty-paid reading is imported.

Verse 4: “I Stand in Him Complete”

And when before the throne I stand in Him complete, “Jesus died my soul to save,” My lips shall still repeat.

The covenant underneath. “Stand in Him complete” is union language, the same vine-and-branch nearness the Hebrew Scriptures and Yeshua both reach for: you are not complete beside Him but in Him, abiding. And “Jesus died my soul to save” is true in every register. But notice the verb: save, yasha, to rescue, to deliver. It is not “Jesus died to absorb the Father’s wrath in my place.” The hymn’s own climactic confession is rescue language, not penal language. Left to its own words, the song is closer to deliverance than to the doctrine the church preaches over it.

What it does to you. The deepest comfort the verse offers is eschatological: one day you will stand before the throne and not be afraid. That is a true and necessary hope, and the human need for final acceptance is not neurotic; it is built in. Honor it. The question is only whether that standing is secured by a transaction completed in a courtroom or by a covenant kept by the One who cut it.

The question the metaphor raises. Even at its peak, the hymn says “died to save,” and saving is rescue. Penal substitution has to add the part the verse leaves out: that the cross was the moment the Father’s justice was satisfied by punishment. The hymn does not say that. Singers supply it because it is in the theological water, not because Elvina Hall’s words require it.

The Modern Bridge: “Paid My Debt and Raised This Life”

A later generation added a bridge that most congregations now sing as if it were original. It runs, in part: “O praise the One who paid my debt, / and raised this life up from the dead” (Passion / Kristian Stanfill, 2006). It does two things at once, and they are in tension.

First, it doubles down on the ledger. “Paid my debt” makes the commercial metaphor the explicit center of praise. But second, and almost by accident, it names the resurrection, and the resurrection is the thing the debt model cannot account for. If the whole transaction was completed at the cross when the debt was paid, the resurrection is a happy epilogue. But in the New Testament the resurrection is not an epilogue. It is the vindication, the Father’s public verdict that the covenant was kept (Romans 4:25, “raised for our justification”). The bridge’s instinct, to praise the rising, is more covenantal than its own debt language admits. The covenant reading can hold both the cross and the empty tomb as one act of covenant faithfulness. The pure payment model has to treat the second as a bonus.

The Altar Call

Here is the part the breakdown is incomplete without, because the song almost never stands alone. Last night it did what it nearly always does. It ended, the band kept playing low underneath, and the call came: every head bowed, every eye closed, if you prayed that prayer in your heart, slip up your hand.

What it does to you. The altar call is not an accident of timing. It is the song’s mechanism finishing itself. Four verses and a refrain have spent ten minutes establishing that your debt is paid and all that remains is to receive it. Then the music does not stop; it drops low and loops, holding the room at the emotional peak while the appeal is made. A decision reached at the crest of manufactured feeling registers as the most real decision of your life, and it is at the same time the most suggestible moment a person can be placed in. The relief on offer is genuine relief, which is exactly what makes the setting so effective: a real ache, a real crescendo, a single narrow exit, and a clock. People reach for the door you are holding open.

The covenant underneath. There is no altar call in the Tanakh and none in the Brit Chadashah. The practice is barely two centuries old. It was systematized by Charles Finney in the 1830s as the “anxious bench,” on the stated theory that conversion is a result the right techniques can produce. Covenant entry in Scripture does not look like a walk to the front at the height of a song. It looks like tevilah, immersion, a whole life turned and washed. It looks like na’aseh v’nishma, “we will do and we will hear,” a commitment that begins at the moment of decision rather than concluding there. The altar call collapses a covenant into a transaction closed by a raised hand. It is the ledger theology made into liturgy: the payment was rendered at the cross, and this is the counter where you sign for the package.

The question it raises. If “Jesus paid it all,” with no remainder, what exactly is the raised hand for? In the song’s own logic the account is already settled. So the altar call has to smuggle back in the one thing the hymn just denied, that something is still required of you: the decision, the prayer, the walk. The transaction was supposed to be finished, and now it waits on your signature. That is the tell. A gospel that is genuinely covenantal does not need a manufactured crisis in order to close, because it was never a sale to begin with. You did not recite a prayer and buy fire insurance; you were called into a people, and that calling keeps asking for your whole life, not your one lifted hand.

What You’re Actually Singing

Put the contract back together and read it whole. Strip the one commercial line and most of “Jesus Paid It All” is devotional dependence, longing for transformation, Passover blood, a softened heart, and rescue. Those are deeply Hebraic, deeply covenantal instincts. The song is better than the doctrine that rides on it.

The trouble is the one metaphor the church has hardened into a system. “Paid it all” is a tender way of saying grace is not earned. But pressed into penal substitution, it becomes the claim that God required the punishment of an innocent to be able to forgive, that He paid Himself, in blood, to satisfy His own justice before He could love. The rest of the hymn does not teach that. Neither does the text. What the text teaches is harder and better: God did not arrange for someone to be punished so He could forgive you. In Messiah, He entered His own covenant and kept it from both sides, in His own body, at His own cost. That is not a debt paid to an offended judge. That is a covenant cut and kept by the One who swore it. It is the difference between being forgiven and being brought into something.

So sing it. But when you reach “all to Him I owe,” know which metaphor you are inside. If “paid” means grace you could never earn, sing it with your whole chest. If “paid” means God had to punish someone before He could stand you, then you are singing a doctrine the song’s own next verses keep trying to escape.

When you sing “all to Him I owe,” who do you picture being paid, and what does it do to you to stay a debtor?

Do you want your debt covered, or your stone heart melted? The hymn promises both. Which one have you actually been living toward?

If the blood of the Lamb is Passover blood, a mark of belonging and not a penalty paid, does that make the cross smaller to you, or larger?

What would change in your worship if “Jesus died my soul to save” meant rescue, the way the word says, and not punishment in your place?

If the debt was already paid in full, what was the altar call asking you to do that the cross had not already done?

Most of us were handed a courtroom: a holy God, a guilty defendant, a debt that had to be paid on a substitute so the books would balance. Millions have loved Yeshua sincerely inside that frame, and I am not here to question their love. I am here to question the frame, because it is not the story the Hebrew Scriptures actually tell. The Hebrew story is not first a courtroom. It is a Garden, a rupture, and a long walk home.

This week I published the longest and most important piece I have ever written for the Table. It follows one thread from Eden to Revelation. The Garden was direct relationship, a Father walking with His children in the cool of the day. The Fall broke it. Every covenant after pointed back toward it. And the Hebrew Savior came to restore it, because only He could.

Along the way it names, simply and by name, the frameworks that buried the story: Augustine’s stain in the blood, Anselm’s feudal ledger, Calvin’s courtroom, Darby’s ticket to heaven. Not one of them is in the text. They were all man made overlay’s. And what is laid over needs to be lifted off.

It also says the one thing that took me several years to find the exact words for.

You cannot have the New Covenant of Jeremiah 31 unless God Himself comes down and takes the human side of it. The incarnation is not Greek metaphysics bolted onto a Hebrew text. It is the only way the covenant could ever be cut.

Both. Because the covenant required both.

People invite me to church. I go.

I am not a fan of institutional Christianity, and I do not believe it is biblical. I have told that to the people who ask me, and I will not hide it from you. But when someone asks me to come, I come, and I bring a notebook. I always leave with something. It is rarely Scripture. More often it is the distance between what was said and what the text actually carries, and that distance teaches me as much as a good sermon would.

This evening it was the word zamar.

The pastor built his message on three Hebrew words for worship: yadah, halal, and zamar. He even named the complexity of Hebrew out loud, which is more than most are willing to do. Then he flattened zamar into the ten-stringed instrument and moved on. The whole hour was worship, worship, worship, and what Yeshua (Jesus) died to purchase for the worshiper. They sang “Jesus Paid It All.” The gospel underneath the music was penal substitution.

I texted the leader of the men’s group afterward, a good friend of mine at this church, and told him what zamar actually holds. Then I sat with it, because the misconception runs wide. Most people use zamar to mean singing with an instrument, and they stop there.

It carries far more than that. And the rest of what it carries turns a worship song into something with an edge.

Western worship has a vocabulary problem.

The English word “worship” is asked to carry too much, and what it carries is mostly emotional. Lift your hands. Feel something. Be moved. The vocabulary betrays the assumption: worship is a state I enter, an experience I have, a posture of the heart that produces, hopefully, a feeling I can hang on to.

The Hebrew Bible has a different vocabulary. Several distinct verbs for praise, each one carrying a posture the others do not. Halal is the boisterous noise. Yadah is the lifted hands and confession. Barukh is the bent knee. Todah is thanks offered as sacrifice. Tehillah is sung praise that became the title of an entire book.

And then there is zamar.

The Word

Zamar (זָמַר) is the verb most translated “to sing praises” or “to make music.” It is the characteristic verb of the Psalter. Zameru l’YHWH chasidav. Sing praises to HaShem, you faithful ones. Azamerah l’shimkha Elyon. I will sing praises to Your name, O Most High. Zamru Elohim zameru, zamru l’malkenu zamru. Sing praises to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our King, sing praises. Tehillim [Psalms] 47 piles the verb five times in two verses, as if the psalmist cannot find a synonym strong enough.

So far, this is what most worship leaders teach when they reach for zamar. The musical verb. The stringed-instrument verb. The praise verb.

What most do not teach is that the same root also means to prune.

ז־מ־ר (zayin-mem-resh). The verb the Torah uses in Vayikra [Leviticus] 25:3-4 when HaShem instructs Israel about the vineyard: shesh shanim tizra sadekha, v’shesh shanim tizmor karmekha. “For six years you are to sow your field, and for six years you are to prune your vineyard and gather its produce.” The Sabbath year follows: lo tizmor. You shall not prune. Same verb. Same root.

The noun mazmerah (מַזְמֵרָה) is what the prophet Yeshayahu [Isaiah] sees beaten into the vineyard tool of the messianic age and beaten back out of it for war: pruning hooks. Yeshayahu 2:4. Yeshayahu 18:5. Yo’el [Joel] 4:10. The pruning hook is named for the cutting it performs.

So the Hebrew has a single root for two actions Western thought never connects: making music and cutting back a vine.

The rabbis noticed. Shir HaShirim [Song of Songs] 2:12 sets the ambiguity on the table deliberately: ha-nitzanim nir’u va-aretz, et ha-zamir higia. The flowers appear in the land, the time of the zamir has come. Is zamir singing (the next clause mentions the turtledove’s voice) or pruning (the agricultural context of early-spring flowers)? The classical commentators argue both ways because both are defensible. Rashi reads it as singing. Ibn Ezra acknowledges the dual sense. Hebrew did not need to choose. The season of singing and the season of pruning are the same season.

What the Vineyard Knows

A vinedresser does not prune dead wood. Dead wood breaks off on its own or gets cleared in winter cleanup. The work of zamar is performed on living branches. Branches that are growing. Branches that look healthy. Branches that have leaves and shoots and tendrils climbing the trellis, looking, to an untrained eye, like they are doing exactly what a branch is supposed to do.

The vinedresser cuts them anyway.

He cuts them because foliage is not fruit. Growth is not yield. A branch can pour all its sap into shoots and leaves that look impressively alive and produce almost no grapes. The pruning hook intervenes. The vinedresser reduces the branch so the remaining wood concentrates its sap into clusters. The vineyard yields more after the cutting, not less.

Yeshua draws on this exactly in Yochanan [John] 15:1-2 (CJB):

“I am the real vine, and my Father is the gardener. Every branch in me that isn’t bearing fruit he cuts off; and every branch that is bearing fruit he prunes, so that it may bear more fruit.”

Two cuttings. Dead wood is removed. Fruitful wood is pruned. The fruitful branch does not get spared the knife. It earns the knife.

His first-century Jewish disciples did not hear “prunes” as an abstract metaphor. They heard zamar underneath the Greek. The verb of musical praise was the verb of viticultural cutting. Their whole religious vocabulary had been telling them this for centuries.

What This Does to Worship

If zamar is both the song and the pruning, then to zamar God is to do two things at once. You are not just making music. You are presenting living wood to the vinedresser and consenting to His knife.

This is what Western worship culture is rarely told. Worship that does not prune you is not zamar. It is performance. It may be enjoyable. It may be moving. It may have excellent production value. But it has cut out half of the Hebrew word and kept only the harp.

The psalmist does not separate the two. When David writes azamerah l’shimkha Elyon in Tehillim 9:2, he is not picturing a concert. He is picturing a vineyard. The same hand that strikes the string holds the pruning hook. He is saying, with his music: cut me back. Take the growth that is not fruit. Reduce me where reducing produces yield.

And here is what the knife is for. The vinedresser does not cut to wound. He cuts to bring the branch closer to the vine. Yochanan [John] 15 is not finally about fruit as output; it is about abiding, about remaining in Him. The pruning clears away everything that was competing for the sap, so that what is left runs straight between you and Him. That nearness is the intimate worship a good worship team can never manufacture for you. You can stand in a beautiful room with your hands in the air, feel the music move through you, and still go home carrying the same distance from Him you walked in with. Or you can let Him cut, and walk out nearer to Him than any song could carry you on its own. The first is foliage. The second is fruit.

That is the posture zamar assumes. The branch that sings is the branch that is offered to the knife.

The Diagnostic

You can tell what kind of worship you are bringing by what comes off you when the song ends.

If nothing was pruned, nothing was zamar. Whatever happened was musical, perhaps emotional, possibly even sincere. It was not the verb the psalmist used. The vinedresser was not invited. The knife was not given permission to work. A gospel preached as a transaction, finished and paid in full, with nothing further asked of the worshiper, will tend to produce exactly this: a worship with nothing to surrender.

If something was pruned, then zamar happened. Maybe a self-image. Maybe a grudge. Maybe a calculation. Maybe an idol that had been growing alongside the genuine wood, stealing the sap. The yield will show up later. The vine will produce more in the next season.

The Father does not only prune dead wood when you sing. He prunes the alive parts that are not fruit. The good-looking growth. The respectable, defensible, ostensibly fine branches. He cuts them because He is after grapes, not foliage. He is after fruit, not the appearance of life.

When you stand up to worship Him, you are standing in the vineyard. The pruning hook is in His hand. The song is your consent. Consent to be brought closer. That is what the cutting was always for.

What would HaShem have to cut back if your worship were actually zamar and not just music?

When was the last time you left a worship gathering with less of yourself than you walked in with, and counted that the gain?

If the Father is the vinedresser and the song is the knife, what are you singing tonight?

Western Christianity has read these two chapters for centuries as if they were two separate elections. One for Israel that expired at the cross. One for the Church that took its place. That reading requires you to ignore what both chapters actually say.

Read them together and replacement theology has nowhere to stand. Read them with Yirmiyahu underneath and the framework collapses entirely.

Romans 9: Israel’s Promises in the Present Tense

Sha’ul opens with anguish. He would be cut off from Mashiach Himself if it would save his kinsmen according to the flesh. Then he lists what still belongs to them.

“They are Isra’el, with whom the adoption of sons, the Shekhinah, the covenants, the giving of the Torah, the Temple service, the promises; to whom belong the patriarchs; and from whom, as far as physical descent is concerned, came the Messiah, who is over all. Praised be ADONAI for ever. Amen.”

Romans 9:4-5 (CJB)

Read what Sha’ul lists. Adoption. The Shekhinah, the dwelling presence. The covenants. The Torah. The Temple service. The promises. The patriarchs. The Messiah’s bloodline.

All of it.

And read what tense he writes it in. Present indicative. ARE Israel. Not WERE Israel. Sha’ul writes this in the mid-50s CE, decades after the resurrection, and he says these things STILL belong to Israel. The covenantal possessions of Israel are not in the past tense for Sha’ul. They are in his present.

The argument does not finish in chapter 9. Sha’ul carries it through chapters 10 and 11, where the partial hardening of Israel is named as the temporary, purposeful mechanism by which the nations are brought in. “All Israel will be saved” (Romans 11:26). “God’s gifts and his calling are irrevocable” (11:29). Anguish in 9:1 to doxology in 11:33. Because Israel’s election did not end.

That is move one.

Ephesians 1: One Plan, Set Before the Foundation

Now read what Sha’ul wrote to a Gentile audience in Ephesus.

“Praised be ADONAI, Father of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, who in the Messiah has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heaven. In the Messiah he chose us in love before the creation of the universe to be holy and without defect in his presence... we have been given an inheritance, we who were marked out beforehand to be his, in keeping with the purpose of the One who effects everything in accordance with the decision of his will... furthermore, you who heard the message of the truth, the Good News offering you deliverance, and put your trust in the Messiah were sealed by him with the promised Ruach HaKodesh.”

Ephesians 1:3-13 (CJB, condensed)

Watch the pronouns. Sha’ul says “we,” referring to himself and the Jewish believers who hoped in Mashiach first (1:12 makes this explicit). Then he says “you,” referring to the Gentile believers who came in after. Then in 1:13, both are sealed in the same Spirit, marked for the same inheritance.

Two groups. One election. One plan.

And the plan is set “before the creation of the universe” (1:4). It is not a backup plan installed when Israel failed. It is not a Church-replacing-Israel plan. It is the plan HaShem had from the beginning. To gather a people in Mashiach. Both Jew and Gentile. Together.

Sha’ul names the seal in the next breath. The Ruach HaKodesh is “the guarantee of our inheritance” (1:14), the arrabonin Greek, a down-payment on the full possession yet to come. The same Spirit on Jewish and Gentile believers alike. The same guarantee. The same inheritance. One people, sealed by the same Spirit, awaiting the same possession.

That is move two.

The Combo

Romans 9 says Israel’s election stands. Present tense. Sha’ul listed every covenantal possession and refused to put any of them in the past.

Ephesians 1 says Gentile election is the EXPANSION of that same election, not its replacement. Set before the foundation of the world. The same plan, the same Mashiach, the same Spirit, the same inheritance.

Read them together and what do you have? One olive tree (Romans 11). Natural branches still attached. Wild branches grafted in. ONE tree. ONE election. ONE people.

Replacement theology requires you to read each chapter alone, in isolation, and to ignore what the other one says. Put the two chapters in the same hand at the same time and the framework collapses.

Jeremiah 32: The Bedrock Under Both Moves

Both of Sha’ul’s chapters are built on top of Jeremiah [Yirmiyahu]. Specifically, on top of one of the most overlooked passages in the prophets.

Yirmiyahu 32 finds the prophet in prison. Yerushalayim is under siege by Babylon. The destruction is imminent. The land is about to be conquered, the people exiled, the institutions burned. In that moment, HaShem tells Yirmiyahu to BUY a field. From his cousin. In Anatot. A piece of land that is about to fall to the Chaldeans. Sealed, witnessed, the deed of purchase stored in an earthen vessel “that they may last many days” (32:14).

Why? Because HaShem is making a statement in the form of a real estate transaction. Even as judgment falls, the future of this land belongs to Israel. The deed is the proof.

And then HaShem speaks.

“I will gather them from all the countries where I drove them in my anger, fury and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and have them live securely. They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them unity of heart and action, so that they will fear me forever, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will never turn away from them but will always do them good; and I will put fear of me in their hearts, so that they will never turn away from me.”

Yirmiyahu 32:37-40 (CJB)

Read what HaShem promises. He will GATHER them back. They will be HIS people. He will be THEIR God. He will give them unity of heart and action. He will make with them a brit olam (בְּרִית עוֹלָם), an everlasting covenant. He will not turn away from doing them good.

This is the bedrock under both of Sha’ul’s chapters. When Sha’ul writes Romans 9 and says these things “ARE” Israel’s, he is standing on Yirmiyahu 32. When Sha’ul writes Ephesians 1 and says the election was set before the foundation of the world, he is reaching back into the same brit olam HaShem named through Yirmiyahu.

The deed of purchase Yirmiyahu sealed in an earthen vessel is the same deed every replacement-theology framework has been trying to tear up for two thousand years. It cannot be torn up. HaShem signed it Himself, in His own anger and wrath, while the city was burning. If the everlasting covenant survived the Babylonians, it survived everything after.

Israel was never replaced. Israel was joined. The election set before the foundation of the world was always going to gather the nations into the same olive tree HaShem planted with Avraham and renewed by deed in Anatot.

The deed is sealed. The vessel holds. The covenant stands. Replacement has nowhere to stand.

I know what you carry. I know what it costs.

You wake up before the house wakes up because somebody has to. You go to work tired because the work is what feeds them. You come home and you have nothing left and you give it anyway, because that is what fathers do, and you do it whether anyone notices or not.

Most days, nobody notices.

I know about the mistakes. The ones you replay at 2 a.m. The sentence you should not have said. The patience you ran out of. The moment you were not there for. The thing your father did that you swore you would never do, and then you did it once, and you have not forgiven yourself yet.

Brothers, hear me. The fact that you replay those moments at 2 a.m. is the evidence that the heart in you is working. A man who did not care would sleep. You do not sleep, because you care. The waking itself is the proof. Hold that. The shame is not the verdict. The care underneath the shame is the verdict. A man who has no conscience never lies awake. You lie awake because the conscience God put in you is doing exactly what He designed it to do.

I know about the under-appreciation. The bills paid that nobody thanks you for. The repairs made. The rides given. The advice they did not want and you gave anyway because somebody had to. The decisions made in silence that nobody will ever know you made. The years you held the floor steady while everyone walked across it without knowing the floor was you.

I see you. I value you. I appreciate you.

So does Yeshua. Not because anyone valued Him in His own day. They didn’t. He was the man of sorrows, the one acquainted with grief, the one His own people did not esteem. The carpenter’s son who knew what unappreciated work looked like in His own home and in His own town. He worked with His hands. He served His mother and brothers. He was rejected by the people who watched Him grow up. He stands with you on that ground specifically. The one who was not valued for the work He was doing knows the exact shape of the cost you carry.

Keep doing what you are doing, with an honest attempt to become a better man. Put the Torah on your heart. Put it in your life. We will thank you for it.

That is what it means to become whole this Father’s Day. [this may help]

That is what Yeshua means with His very own name of salvation: yasha, to be made whole. Yasha does not mean escape from punishment. It means to be brought into a wide-open place, to be restored, to be healed, to be made what you were always meant to be. Yeshua IS the wholeness. The desire underneath your fathering, the desire to do the best you can for your children, is the desire He put in you. That desire is Torah on the heart, brothers. Not a rule that constrains you. An instruction that lives in you. The wanting itself is the inscription. The Father who put it there knows it is there. He values it. And so do I.

This is my prayer for you. My prayer to Abba on your behalf. That the same God who wrote the desire into your heart would honor that desire and complete it. That the days of unseen work would not feel like nothing. That your children, in the years to come, would understand the floor they walked on. And that you would know, in the quiet moments at 2 a.m., that you are seen.

Never forget it. Torah on the heart.

And to the fathers reading this who are already whole: God bless you. Be a light for the brothers still walking the road.

Listen to the promise in Yirmeyahu 31 once more, now that we know what it is not. A day is coming, He says, when He will put His Torah within us and write it on our hearts. The same lev He asked us to lay His words upon, He now promises to inscribe Himself. We could not carry Him there on our own, so He says He will do the carrying. The heart that could not be forced, He wins by writing on it.

And He tells us how. In Yechezkel [Ezekiel] 36 He says, “I will put my Ruach [Spirit] within you, and cause you to walk in my chuqqim [statutes]” (Yechezkel [Ezekiel] 36:26-27). There is the hinge the whole letter has been moving toward. Understand what the Ruach is, because everything turns on it. The word means breath, wind, the moving air of life itself. It is the same Ruach that hovered over the waters in the beginning (B’reshit 1:2), the very breath HaShem breathed into the first man (B’reshit 2:7). So the Ruach HaKodesh, the Spirit of Holiness, is not some separate being standing apart from Him, and it is not your own conscience given a holier name. It is HaShem’s own breath, His own presence, set down inside you. The Ruach is not an alternative to the mitzvot, and not an alternative to Him. It is how He writes the mitzvot inward, how He turns a command you obey into a love you live, how He makes the reading become a knowing. And mark this, because it is the whole difference: it is not your own heart amplified. It is His heart, given. The Torah written by the Ruach on the lev is the Father Himself teaching you to want what He wants.

Watch what that does to an ordinary commandment, because this is where it stops being abstract.

Two people keep Shabbat. One is watching the clock and counting the prohibitions, measuring the permitted distance, anxious he has missed something. He is tending a fence. The other has been drawn by the Ruach into the Father’s own rest, and the day has become the weekly hour a son spends unhurried in his Father’s house. Same command. Two entirely different interiors. One is managing a rule. One is keeping an appointment with Someone he loves.

Two people give tzedakah [righteous giving]. One writes the check to balance the ledger and feel the account is square. The other has had his very wants rebuilt, so that the Ruach has made him love the man he is helping, and the giving is no longer a tax on righteousness but the natural motion of a retrained heart. Same mitzvah. One is paying. One is loving.

Two people come to the moadim [appointed times], the feasts Constantine’s church legislated away. One shows up because the calendar says to. The other meets the Bridegroom at the times He set for the meeting, and finds the feasts were never Israel’s homework but the Father’s own anniversaries, the dates He circled to be with His people. The same is true at the table, in the keeping of His ways with food, in every command you could name. Kept from the outside, it is compliance. Written on the inside by the Ruach, it is the native language of a son who has learned his Father’s house.

This is not a new arrangement that cancels the old one. This is the Father keeping the Yirmeyahu promise. When the Ruach was poured out at Shavuot [the Feast of Weeks], the same feast where Israel received the Torah at Sinai, HaShem was not replacing the Torah. He was writing it where it could never again be guarded into silence, or set down as expired, or mistaken for a voice we generated ourselves. This is what Sha’ul means by the Torah of the Ruach (Romans 8:2), and by the fruit of the Ruach against which there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23). How could there be a law against it? It is the law itself, finally lived from the inside.

Not Of This World

John 18:36 Has a Hebraic Spine the Bumper Stickers Missed

The Jehovah’s Witnesses use it to argue Christians should not vote or fight in wars. The t-shirts wear it as a badge of separation. The bumper stickers signal a quiet superiority over worldly concerns. And every popular reading misses what Yeshua actually said when He spoke those words to Pontius Pilate.

“Yeshua answered, ‘My kingship does not derive its authority from this world’s order of things. If it did, my men would have fought to keep me from being arrested by the Judeans. But my kingship does not come from here.’”

John 18:36 (CJB)

How I would read it…

“My throne does not rise up from this ground. If it had been planted in this soil, my men would have drawn their swords against those who came for me, and you would not see me standing here bound. But my throne rises from a different place altogether.”

Let’s unpack this, shall we. 😉

This verse has been used to argue everything from pacifism to imperial conquest, from political quietism to escapist withdrawal. The same nine words have been bent in opposite directions by people equally certain they were quoting Yeshua. That tells you something. A verse that can be made to mean anything has already been stripped of what it actually said.

Let’s give it back its native voice.

The Greek Word Is About Source, Not Location

The Greek preposition Yeshua uses is ek (ἐκ), which means “out of” or “from.” It denotes ORIGIN, not LOCATION. He is not saying “my kingdom is located somewhere other than here.” He is saying “my kingdom does not get its authority FROM here.”

Pilate is standing in front of Him. Pilate represents Roman imperial power. Rome’s authority comes from violence, conquest, hierarchy, military force. When Yeshua says “my kingdom is not OF this world,” He is naming a contrast in SOURCE. His kingdom’s authority does not come from Caesar. It comes from His Father.

That is the contrast. Not heaven versus earth. Caesar versus the Father.

The Kingdom of God in the Tanakh Is Earthly

The Hebrew word for kingdom is malkhut (מַלְכוּת). It is HaShem’s reign, His active sovereign rule. And in the Tanakh, HaShem’s malkhut is profoundly earthly.

Genesis 1: HaShem makes a physical earth, calls it good, gives it to humanity to steward as His vice-regents.

Exodus 19:6: Israel is to be a “kingdom of priests.” On the earth.

Isaiah 2: In the latter days, all nations will flow to Jerusalem to learn Torah. Earthly.

Daniel 7:13-14: The Son of Man is given dominion, glory, and a kingdom that all peoples shall serve. Earthly.

Zechariah 14: HaShem will be king over all the earth, and all nations will go up to Jerusalem to keep Sukkot. Earthly.

The kingdom of HaShem in the prophetic tradition is the restoration of heaven AND earth under HaShem’s reign, with Jerusalem as its center, Torah as its constitution, and Mashiach as its King.

The Lord’s Prayer Is the Key

Yeshua taught His disciples to pray: “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, ON EARTH as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

The kingdom comes. Where? On earth.

Yeshua’s own prayer for His disciples is for the kingdom to invade earth, not for them to escape earth into the kingdom. The direction of motion is heaven-to-earth, not earth-to-heaven.

Revelation Confirms It

The end of the canonical witness is Revelation 21. What happens? The holy city, the New Jerusalem, comes DOWN out of heaven (Revelation 21:2). The dwelling place of HaShem is WITH MEN (21:3). The consummation is not believers going to heaven. It is heaven coming down to earth. The kingdom arrives.

If Yeshua’s kingdom had nothing to do with the earth, the final book of the canon would not end with a city descending onto a renewed earth.

What Yeshua Actually Said

Simply read the verse again with its native voice in place.

“My kingship does not derive its authority from this world’s order of things.”

The kingdom does not get its authority from Caesar. It gets its authority from the Father. The kingdom does not operate by Caesar’s methods. It operates by the Father’s. But the kingdom is absolutely meant to come to earth, to reign over the earth, to restore the earth.

The misreading produces political quietism, escapism, dualism, disengagement from injustice. None of that is in the verse. None of that is in the Tanakh. None of that is in what Yeshua taught His disciples to pray for.

The kingdom is not FROM this world. It is FOR this world. The bumper stickers have been printing the wrong line for two thousand years.

There are 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah. Rabbinic Judaism counted them and built a careful fence around them. Western Christianity counted them too and ran. It has taught for centuries that these laws are invalid.

Both responses miss the entire point.

The Torah is not a rulebook. Yes, there are instructions in it. Yes, there is a submissive posture toward the Maker of the universe that runs throughout the entire Bible, and you ignore it at your peril. But submission is not the point of the Torah. Submission is a posture inside a relationship. The point is the relationship.

The Torah is the only documented direct engagement we have with the God of creation. It is the only sustained record of His own voice given to humanity, in His own words, with His own emphasis, with His own choice of which things to record and which things to leave out. Read that sentence twice. There is no other text in human history that claims this and is taken seriously as such by the largest civilizations to ever exist. The Torah is humanity’s only sustained encounter with HaShem’s own self-disclosure.

That changes everything about how we are supposed to approach it.

It is a love letter. It is the testimony of a Father whose face we have not yet seen, given so we can begin to know who He is. When He tells us to put His words on our heart and on our mind (Deuteronomy 6:6), He is not asking for performance. He is asking for intimacy. He is asking us to know Him the way a son knows the father he loves, not the way a servant memorizes the master’s instructions.

Paul understood this. When he tells the Romans that creation itself testifies of HaShem (Romans 1:20), he is not contradicting the Torah. He is amplifying the same point Moses was making at Sinai. Look around. The sky. The birds. The trees. The whole order of things is shouting at you about who HaShem is. The Torah is the formal verbal disclosure. Creation is the surrounding evidence. Both point to the same Person.

Now look at why each tradition did what it did.

Rabbinic Judaism, fearful of failing the commandments, built a seyag (fence) around the Torah. Layer upon layer of interpretive safeguard designed to make sure no one accidentally breaks a command. The intention is reverent. The effect is that the Person behind the words gets buried under the apparatus that was built to protect the words.

Western Christianity, terrified of legalism, did not build a fence. It burned the letters. It threw out the Father’s own words because someone decided those words were too demanding, replaced the disclosure with a system of doctrines about the disclosure, and then wondered why the relationship felt thin.

Both responses are about submission. The Jewish response wants to succeed at submission. The Western Christian response wants to escape submission. Both reduce the Torah to a question of submission, and both miss what the Torah actually is.

It is not a rulebook. It is a love letter from the Maker of the universe to the humanity He made.

When He tells us to put it on our heart, He is not asking us simply to memorize statutes. He is asking us to come close enough to recognize His voice. To have reverence for Him because we know who He is, not because we have been told to. To obey what He loves because we have come to love what He loves. To know Him the way a son knows a father.

The 613 commandments are not the point. They are the structure of an intimacy that was offered before the structure existed. The Father wrote the letter first. The instructions are inside the letter. Read the letter as a letter, and the instructions will read themselves correctly. Read the letter as an instruction manual, and you will miss everything that matters in it.

That is the warning to the Jewish reader, who knows the letter exists but has covered it with so many fences that the Voice has become muffled.

It is the warning to the Christian reader, who decided the letter no longer applies and has therefore never read what HaShem actually said about Himself.

And it is the warning underneath both. When Yeshua (Jesus) turns people away in Matthew 7, people who were certain they belonged to Him, His words are not “you broke the rules.” His words are “I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of anomia,” which means, in the plainest reading of the Greek, you who lived without Torah. Sit with what He joined together in that one sentence. The charge is Torahlessness. The verdict is a failure of knowing. He does not say they failed an exam. He says there was never a relationship. They had His name in their mouths and had never met Him.

That is what a misfiled letter costs. Read the Torah as a law to be guarded or a law to be escaped, and you can spend an entire life close to it and never once know the One who wrote it. And the most painful thing a person could hear from the Maker of the universe is not “you failed.” It is “I never knew you.”

So this is the invitation to all of us. The category was wrong from the start. The Torah is not the law we were handed. It is the Father introducing Himself. The letter is open. He is still speaking. Read it as a letter. Come and know Him, so that you are never someone He has to say He never knew.

P.S. There is one more thing, and I simply cannot leave out, because it is the most beautiful part.

Listen to what the Father promises in Jeremiah 31. He says a day is coming when He will put His Torah within us and write it on our hearts, and then He says the reason: “they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.” Read that again. The same heart He asked us to lay His words upon, He now promises to write upon Himself. We could not carry Him there on our own, so He says He will do the carrying.

The whole arc closes here. The tragedy of Matthew 7 was a Father saying “I never knew you.” The promise of Jeremiah 31 is the same Father swearing that one day no one will have to say “know HaShem” to anyone, because every last one of them already will.

That is what he is sharing. Not a code to keep. A Father who would rather write Himself onto your heart than leave you guessing about who He is. He gives Himself. That is the whole transaction. He gives Himself!

And this is what should stop every believer cold.

We have held that promise in our hands for twenty-six centuries and simplified it an idea called law. We have hungered for a hundred lesser things and walked past the one document in human history where the Maker of the universe says, in His own voice, I want to be known by you. If we saw it clearly for even one moment, taking it lightly would feel like what it actually is. An atrocity. You do not yawn at a Father offering you His own heart. You weep, and you open the letter with a hunger to know Him at the deepest possible level.

The seductress in Proverbs 7 has just been to the Temple. She has paid her vows today. She has sacrificial meat in her house from the zibchei shelamim (peace offerings) she offered at the altar. Western teaching on this chapter usually misses that detail entirely, and missing it costs the chapter its sharpest warning.

Proverbs 7 is wisdom literature, not prophecy. Shlomo HaMelekh (Solomon the King) is not predicting end times. He is naming a pattern that operates in every generation and in every assembly that has ever called itself by HaShem’s Name. The pattern is the religious system that has the form of observance and the function of seduction. The pattern catches the simple. The pattern leads to Sheol (the realm of the dead).

“From the window of my house I looked out through my lattice and saw among the inexperienced, among the young men I noticed a youth devoid of all sense. He crossed the street near her corner and walked along the way to her house at twilight, in the evening of the day, in the deep darkness of the night. The woman approached him, dressed like a prostitute, with cunning purpose. She grabbed him, kissed him, and brazenly said to him, ‘I had to bring peace-offerings, and today I have paid my vows. That is why I came out to meet you, to look for you, and now I have found you. I have spread brocaded coverlets on my bed; the linen comes from Egypt. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. Come, let’s make love till morning. We’ll enjoy the delights of love. For my husband isn’t at home; he has gone on a long trip.’ With her flowing speech she lures him, she pulls him in with her smooth talk. Suddenly he goes after her like an ox on its way to be slaughtered, like a fool to be punished in the stocks. So now, children, listen to me; pay attention to what I am saying. Don’t let your heart turn to her ways; don’t stray onto her paths. Her house is the way to Sh’ol, leading down to the halls of death.”

Proverbs 7:6-27 (CJB, abridged)

The First Misconception: It Is Only About Adultery

The default Western reading treats Proverbs 7 as a personal-purity sermon. Shlomo (Solomon) warns his son against literal sexual infidelity. Apply to your dating life. Move on.

That reading is not wrong. It also does not go far. Proverbs 7 sits inside a Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures) tradition where sexual imagery is the prophetic shorthand for covenantal infidelity.

Hosea is commanded to marry Gomer, who plays the harlot, as a living parable of Israel’s covenantal betrayal. Zanoh tizneh ha-aretz me’acharei ADONAI (Hosea 1:2). “The land has committed great harlotry by forsaking ADONAI.”

Ezekiel 16 describes Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) as a foundling whom HaShem rescued, raised, married, and adorned, only to see her use HaShem’s gifts to play the harlot with foreign lovers.

Isaiah 1:21. Eikhah hayetah l’zonah kiriyah ne’emanah (אֵיכָה הָיְתָה לְזוֹנָה קִרְיָה נֶאֱמָנָה). “How has the faithful city become a harlot.”

The prophets did not invent this metaphor. The zenut (זְנוּת, harlotry) is the betrayal of the covenant through false religion. Foreign gods. Foreign priests. Foreign systems that look like religion but operate against the actual covenant.

Proverbs 7 sits inside this tradition. Shlomo’s isha zarah (אִשָּׁה זָרָה, the strange woman) is the personified shape of every religious-cultural system that competes for the lev (heart, inner will) of the covenantal people. The literal reading is true. The covenantal reading is also true. Both operate simultaneously.

The Second Misconception: It Is Misogynist

The second misread is that Proverbs 7 represents Shlomo’s view of women. This misses what he is doing structurally across chapters 1 through 9.

Shlomo personifies wisdom and folly as two women. Chokhmah (חָכְמָה, Wisdom personified), Lady Wisdom, calls out in the streets in Proverbs 1, 8, and 9:1-6. Eshet Kesilut (אֵשֶׁת כְּסִילוּת, Madam Folly) calls out in Proverbs 7 and 9:13-18. Both are voices. Both have houses. Both invite the peti (פֶּתִי, the simple young man) to come in.

The contrast is the structural argument of Proverbs 1-9. The young man must discern between the two voices, distinguish their calls, choose which house to enter. The chapter is not about women. It is about discernment between competing systems, and Shlomo uses the female-personification convention of the wisdom literature to embody them.

Verse Fourteen: The Religious Cover

This is the structural masterstroke of Proverbs 7, and where the chapter turns from generic warning into pointed institutional diagnostic.

Verse 14 begins the woman’s speech. Before she invites him to her bed, she names her religious credentials.

Zivchei sh’lamim alai, ha-yom shilamti n’darai (זִבְחֵי שְׁלָמִים עָלָי הַיּוֹם שִׁלַּמְתִּי נְדָרָי). “Peace offerings were upon me; today I have paid my vows.”

Read this slowly.

Zibchei shelamim (peace offerings) are prescribed in Leviticus 3 and 7. Unlike the burnt offerings (entirely consumed on the altar) or the sin offerings (eaten only by priests), the shelamim were the only offering category in which the worshiper themselves received a portion of the sacrificial meat. The offerer brought the animal. The priest performed the ritual. A portion went to the altar. A portion went to the priest. A portion went home with the offerer to be eaten in a sacred meal, generally that same day, with family and guests.

When the woman says she has zibchei shelamim in her house, she is naming exactly this. She has just been to the Temple. She has fulfilled her vows. She has sacrificial meat in her house, fresh, from the altar. And she is using it to invite the simple young man to her bed.

The religious observance is real. The vows have been paid. The Temple credentials are in order. And all of it functions as the cover for what is about to happen.

This is the detail Western moralistic teaching almost always glosses over. The seduction does not come from the streets in any obvious way. The seduction comes wearing the vestments of Temple observance. The woman is not outside the religious system. She is inside it. She uses its language. She fulfills its requirements. She paid her vows today. And she is luring the simple young man with her religious credentials as her opening line.

Shlomo is telling his sons something no purely moralistic reading can hear. The most dangerous seduction is not the one that looks like seduction. It is the one that looks like religion.

The Tanakh Pattern: Observance as Cover

This pattern operates throughout the prophetic literature.

Isaiah 1:11-15. HaShem rejects the sacrifices of Yerushalayim. “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me? says ADONAI. I am full of the burnt offerings of rams.” The sacrifices were real. The vows were paid. And HaShem says: I hate your appointed feasts. The system’s observance had become the cover for the system’s injustice.

Micah 6:6-8. What does HaShem require? Not multiplied sacrifices. Not thousands of rams. Asot mishpat, v’ahavat chesed, v’hatzne’a lekhet im-Elohekha. To do justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with your God.

The religious system can become an isha zarah (strange woman) when its observance becomes the cover rather than the substance. The vows can be paid. The offerings can be brought. The standing in the assembly can be real. And underneath all of it, the seduction of the simple is operating in plain sight, with the zibchei shelamim (peace offerings) as the opening line of the seductress’s speech.

The Institutional Application

This is where the chapter lands on the institutional dimension of the church, and the landing has to be careful. Not all institutional religion is the isha zarah. Some institutions are faithful. The warning is not against institution as such. The warning is against the institutional dimension of religion that has slipped into the pattern Proverbs 7 names.

When religious observance becomes the cover for covenantal infidelity, the isha zarah pattern is operating.

When the institution’s interpretive grip seduces the simple away from direct hearing of HaShem’s Davar (the living Word), the pattern is operating.

When the institution claims authority based on its own observances (”I have paid my vows today”) rather than on faithfulness to the Davar, the pattern is operating.

This applies to every tradition. The medieval Roman system that promised sacramental access while the Davar sat untranslated in Latin. The Protestant denominationalism that promised assurance through doctrinal conformity while the actual kahal (assembly, body of believers) fractured. The contemporary platform-driven church complex that promises spiritual experience through production values while the kahal gathers around brands. The Hebraic-roots movements that promise restoration through Torah observance while sometimes substituting their own interpretive grids for the actual text.

No tradition is exempt. The warning applies to all of us. The readers of this Substack. The writer too.

The self-implication is required by the text. Shlomo is watching from his window. He does not say “watch out for those people in that other religious system.” He says, “Now therefore, O sons, listen to me.” The warning is to his own sons. The isha zarah does not announce herself as the isha zarah. She announces herself as the woman who paid her vows today.

The Simple, the Sheol, the Cost

Shlomo names his subject in verse 7. Ba-banim avinah na’ar chasar-lev (בַּבָּנִים אָבִינָה נַעַר חֲסַר לֵב). “Among the sons I discerned a young man lacking lev.”

The Hebrew chasar-lev (lacking heart) literally means lacking the discernment, the covenantal core, the leiv shalem (a whole, undivided heart) that the wisdom tradition prizes. He is peti (פֶּתִי, simple), open, unformed, easily influenced. The institutional seduction primarily catches the peti. The peti is the one whose feet have just wandered near the corner. The voice he listens to determines what he becomes.

The chapter closes with the destination. Darkhei sh’ol beitah, yor’dot el-chadrei mavet. “Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.”

The isha zarah‘s house is not the destination she advertises. She offers love until the morning, the bed adorned, the perfumes of myrrh and aloes and cinnamon. The advertisement is real. The destination is Sheol (death and separation from the living God).

The same is true of every institutional system that has slipped into the pattern. The advertised destination is spiritual life. The underlying trajectory, when the pattern is operating, leads to covenantal stupor, the inability to hear the actual Davarof HaShem because the institutional voice has filled the room with its own substitute.

The cost is not measured in church attendance or doctrinal correctness. The cost is measured in covenantal vitality. The simple who follow the isha zarah‘s voice end up where her house ends up.

Pull up Proverbs 7 in full and read it slowly, with the diagnostic from this post in your hand. Each verse operates at both the personal and the institutional level.

Pull up Proverbs 8 and 9 immediately after. Read Chokhmah‘s (Lady Wisdom’s) parallel speech in 8 and her invitation in 9:1-6. Then read Madam Folly in 9:13-18. The two voices use similar vocabulary. The discernment between them is the work of lev.

Pull up Isaiah 1:11-21 and Micah 6:6-8. Notice the pattern: the sacrifices were real, the assemblies were observed, and HaShem hated it because the substance had gone hollow.

Don’t take my word for any of this. Take Solomon’s. Take Isaiah’s. Take Micah’s.

If the isha zarah (strange woman, the seducing system) presents herself as religiously observant before she ever invites the simple to her bed, what religious-observance signals in your current assembly have you been receiving uncritically because the observance looked correct from the outside?

If the institutional pattern can catch any of us regardless of tradition, what makes you confident that your own tradition is exempt? And if the answer is “because we have the right doctrine” or “because we keep the right observances,” consider that those are the same answers the isha zarah would give in verse 14.

And the harder one: if her house is the way to Sheol (death, the realm of separation from God) regardless of how many vows have been paid at her altar, what is required of you to discern which house you are currently living in? The discernment requires lev (heart, the covenantal core of you). Where is your lev being formed?

You have heard “spare the rod, spoil the child” quoted as Scripture. It is not Scripture. It is a line from a 1662 poem by Samuel Butler. The verse people think they are quoting uses shebet, the shepherd’s rod, the same staff that comforts in Psalm 23. A word for keeping a child off the cliff edge became a warrant for striking him.

That is one example of a single mistake the church has made over and over, and my new essay traces it through seven doctrines. The mistake is simple to name. Genesis 3:16, “your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you,” gets read as God’s design for marriage. But it is not a design. It sits inside a list of consequences: pain in childbirth, thorns in the field, a snake on its belly. Nobody reads “cursed is the ground” as God’s blueprint for farming. Only one line in that passage gets pulled out and called architecture, and it is the line that happened to be useful to people who wanted authority underwritten by God.

The essay does something the marriage conversation usually does not. It shows that the same move, reading a consequence as a command, did not stay in the marriage. It built at least seven houses: corporal punishment, female subordination, male headship scaled up into church hierarchy, suffering treated as automatically holy, dominion read as a license to strip-mine the earth, the curse of Ham handed to slaveholders, and labor turned into sacred poverty. Some of those houses have body counts.

And here is the part that should unsettle anyone who thinks this is a modern complaint. It is not new. Yeshua named it, quoting Isaiah, when he said people worship in vain teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. Jeremiah named it twenty-six centuries ago when he said the lying pen of the scribes had made the Torah into a lie. Ezekiel named it. Paul named it. The warning is older than the error.

The way out was never hidden either. When the Pharisees pressed Yeshua on divorce in Matthew 19, he did not argue about the permission. He went back to the beginning, to how it was before the rupture, and said “from the beginning it was not so.” That is the test. Run it on Genesis 3:16 and the doctrine falls apart in your hands.

We have confused a production with a people. The modern church engineers belonging the way a marketer designs a room: tiered seating, lowered lights, a stage where the many watch the few, and it calls the feeling that machinery manufactures “community.” But when the program changes, the relationships dissolve, because they were never built on the people in the first place.

In this study, Sergio draws on his own marketing background to take apart the machinery of manufactured belonging, then goes to the Hebrew to recover what was lost. The edah (עֵדָה), from the root meaning to be appointed and summoned, is not a crowd filling a space. It is a people gathered around a shared purpose, around the presence of God at the ohel moed, the tent of meeting. When the cloud lifted, Israel moved, and the edah stayed whole, because it was never the tent.

From there: why program-based community hardens into rival branded camps instead of the one ekklesia; why Hebrews 10:25 commands covenant gathering, not organizational attendance; and why manufactured belonging is exactly the “commandment of men learned by rote” that Isaiah named and Yeshua confronted. The heart of it is simple and uncomfortable. You cannot build community. You can only become the kind of person community forms around. Aim at the fruit and you get a program. Tend the root, daily obedience, proven character, a life pointed at Abba and spent on people, and the fruit comes on its own.

A word for anyone who has felt alone in a crowded sanctuary, or wondered whether walking away from the production means walking away from the body. It does not.
