I’ve spent more than 20 years consulting for companies. Fortune 500 names you’d know and startups you never heard of and everything in between. And somewhere in all of that I built a habit I can’t shut off. I see an organization, and I immediately start reading it.

How’s it structured. Who actually runs it. Does the thing on the wall match the thing on the floor. You do it long enough and it becomes a sense, like a mechanic hearing an engine and knowing what’s wrong before he opens the hood.

So this morning I’m drinking my coffee and I’m thinking about Christianity. Not the faith. The operation. The way it actually runs out there in the real world. And I keep landing on the same uncomfortable place.

I have never once seen a real company survive running the way modern Christianity runs. Not a single one. It would not last. The model would collapse inside a year, and any consultant worth his rate would tell you exactly why on day one.

So let me show you the company. Let me build it in front of you, piece by piece, the way I’d walk a client through their own org chart. And somewhere in the middle of it, I think you’re going to recognize where we are.

Imagine a company.

The founder built it from the ground up. He built a lot of things in his life, but this one he built with his own two hands. Every training session, recorded. Every procedure, his. It was new, so the original staff made mistakes. A lot of them. That’s how it goes when something’s just getting started.

Years pass. The founder’s still active, still very much alive, just moved to oversight now. He watches. And his son comes up through the company from the bottom. Starts on the floor like everyone else. The perfect example. Does it all exactly the way the father laid it out, to the letter.

But management got to the operation first.

They took what the father built and made it a fortress. Strict. So strict nobody could keep the standard, and that was the point. They built a ranking on top of it, tiers, who’s in and who’s out, an inner circle the father never asked for. He never wanted a hierarchy. He wanted a staff who knew how to make the thing run. Relationships over rules. The father’s whole plan was relationship, and they turned it into a rulebook so heavy nobody could lift it. Open door policy? Gone. You needed an appointment and a title now.

So the son does what a son does. He corrects them. Points to the recordings, points to the original manual, says this isn’t it, this was never it.

They fire him.

And on his way out he doesn’t go quiet. He tells the whole staff. They restructured my father’s business. Buried it in their own rules, their own tiers, their own inner circle. This isn’t what he built. So I’m restoring it, to his terms, the original terms, the way it was supposed to run. Stay or go, that’s on you. But if you stay with me, you get what the father actually promised. The retirement. The benefits. The open door.

Some stayed with management. Some saw it and followed the son, who turned out to be the real boss the whole time. Undercover the entire time, funny enough. And working for him had a homeliness to it. He didn’t write anything new. He showed them the father’s ordinances, the layout, the plan, the originals, and he ran it to a T, exactly as written, nothing added and nothing shaved off. He put it back the way it was always meant to be. And they loved it. It worked. It was never heavy. The yoke was light because it was the right yoke.

Now there was a senior executive. A guy named Paul. Best-trained man in the entire company. Doctorate from the top school in the country, top of his class, credentialed past anybody. He came up inside the strict firm, the strictest of the strict, and he was the best there ever was at it. And he saw it. Saw the son was the real boss, saw what management had done to the place. So he left. Walked out of the corner office and said the founder never wanted this thing locked up for the inner circle. He built it for anybody. And there’s a whole world out there that’s never even heard the company name.

So Paul goes out to them. The ones with no history here, no badge, no training, nothing. And he brings them in. Same manual. Same ordinances. Same founder, same son, same terms. He didn’t write a new company either. He carried the existing one, the restored one, to people who’d never been told it was for them. The door the father always wanted open, Paul walked through it and waved the outsiders in.

That was the founder’s heart the whole time. Available to anybody. Paul just believed him.

Now there was a bigger competitor out there. The kind that ruled by force. Everything they ran, they ran by power, compliance, do it or else, that was the only language they knew. And they watched this little company. They saw the affection in it. They saw people who actually wanted to be there, wanted to belong to it, wanted to obey because they loved the thing, not because they were made to. And the competitor wanted that. You can’t buy that. You can’t threaten it into people. So instead of joining it, they took it in. Absorbed it. Did a full rebrand, slapped their own colors on it, and stood themselves up as the first real competitor to the original. And they tried to shut the original down. Abolish it. Say the old company doesn’t exist anymore, we’re what it became.

And here’s the strange part. The founder let it happen.

Because the founder knew something the competitor never could. You cannot force this. A company ruled by force only ever produces performers. People who clock in, hit the marks, put on the face, and feel nothing. And that was never what he wanted. He never wanted performance. He wanted sincerity. A real heart change, the kind that makes somebody a true employee, not an actor collecting on a role. So he let the counterfeit run loud out front, and the real thing stayed on the side. Quiet. Small. Still building. Still restoring. Because the ones who found it there wanted to be there, and that was the only kind of employee the founder ever cared about.

Then out of that rebrand came the franchisees.

Oh man, we want in on this. This is beautiful. You mess up, you’re forgiven. You get the retirement, the benefits, the whole package. Gorgeous. But here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re not actually gonna do the work. We’ll take the name, we’ll take the logo, we’ll take the retirement plan, and we’ll open our own locations. Same CEO on the sign. Same founder’s name over the door. Just no manual. No ordinances. No adherence, no obedience. We come in, we play all day, and we collect.

And the managers they hire, they’re the exact opposite of the old crew. Remember the fortress guys, the strict ones, the rankings and the appointments? These new ones are the flip side of the same coin. They’re fun. They sing. They’re funny, they put on a show, and every week the employees can’t wait to come hang out. Best hour of the week. Nobody’s ever uncomfortable, nobody’s ever corrected, nobody’s ever refined. You come, you feel good, you leave exactly the way you walked in. Year after year.

And in all that time, they never actually meet the founder. They never learn the manual. They just see his picture on the wall and wave at it. That’s the relationship. A photo and a good feeling.

Now sit with this for a minute. The old management was strict but at least the paycheck was real. These franchises? The employees pay to work there.

Unauthorized franchises. The CEO never signed off. The founder never sent them. They printed his name on a storefront he never built and kept every benefit while throwing out every instruction. Grace with the register still open and the work floor empty.

And that’s the tell, if you’re paying attention. Watch how each side fills a room.

One side has to recruit. They need the environment, the lights, the sound, the personality up front working the crowd. They need the show to bring people in and the show to keep them, because take the music away and there’s nothing holding anybody there. The draw is the production. It has to be, because there’s no operations manual underneath it.

The other side doesn’t recruit at all. Doesn’t have to. People just watch how those employees live. How they carry themselves, how they treat each other, what they do when nobody’s clocking them. They see somebody different and they want to know why.

No stage. No sound system. No personality out front closing the deal. Just a life that looks like it came from somewhere real, and people walk toward it on their own.

One draws with the room. The other draws with the fruit.

They’ll tell you the son sent them.

He didn’t.

P.S. Here’s the irony.

The franchise employees make fun of the original staff. The ones who’ve been there since the founder had his sleeves rolled up building the thing. They mock them for their dedication. For actually following the manual. For caring about the ordinances nobody else reads anymore. Backwards, they call it. Stuck. Didn’t get the memo.

And they say it with total confidence, because somewhere along the way they got told the original staff was let go. Replaced. Written out of the founder’s heart, made obsolete by the new model.

Except the original staff was in the room when he built it. They ran the first shift. Their names are on the founding paperwork. The founder never fired them, never replaced them, never said one word about writing them off. That’s a story the franchises tell about people they’ve never worked a day beside.

So you’ve got employees who pay to play, who never learned the manual, who never met the founder, laughing at the ones who were there at the beginning and never left. Mocking the veterans for still doing the job the way the founder himself trained them to do it.

Read that back and sit with who’s actually laughing at who.

I know what you carry. I know what it costs.

You wake up before the house wakes up because somebody has to. You go to work tired because the work is what feeds them. You come home and you have nothing left and you give it anyway, because that is what fathers do, and you do it whether anyone notices or not.

Most days, nobody notices.

I know about the mistakes. The ones you replay at 2 a.m. The sentence you should not have said. The patience you ran out of. The moment you were not there for. The thing your father did that you swore you would never do, and then you did it once, and you have not forgiven yourself yet.

Brothers, hear me. The fact that you replay those moments at 2 a.m. is the evidence that the heart in you is working. A man who did not care would sleep. You do not sleep, because you care. The waking itself is the proof. Hold that. The shame is not the verdict. The care underneath the shame is the verdict. A man who has no conscience never lies awake. You lie awake because the conscience God put in you is doing exactly what He designed it to do.

I know about the under-appreciation. The bills paid that nobody thanks you for. The repairs made. The rides given. The advice they did not want and you gave anyway because somebody had to. The decisions made in silence that nobody will ever know you made. The years you held the floor steady while everyone walked across it without knowing the floor was you.

I see you. I value you. I appreciate you.

So does Yeshua. Not because anyone valued Him in His own day. They didn’t. He was the man of sorrows, the one acquainted with grief, the one His own people did not esteem. The carpenter’s son who knew what unappreciated work looked like in His own home and in His own town. He worked with His hands. He served His mother and brothers. He was rejected by the people who watched Him grow up. He stands with you on that ground specifically. The one who was not valued for the work He was doing knows the exact shape of the cost you carry.

Keep doing what you are doing, with an honest attempt to become a better man. Put the Torah on your heart. Put it in your life. We will thank you for it.

That is what it means to become whole this Father’s Day. [this may help]

That is what Yeshua means with His very own name of salvation: yasha, to be made whole. Yasha does not mean escape from punishment. It means to be brought into a wide-open place, to be restored, to be healed, to be made what you were always meant to be. Yeshua IS the wholeness. The desire underneath your fathering, the desire to do the best you can for your children, is the desire He put in you. That desire is Torah on the heart, brothers. Not a rule that constrains you. An instruction that lives in you. The wanting itself is the inscription. The Father who put it there knows it is there. He values it. And so do I.

This is my prayer for you. My prayer to Abba on your behalf. That the same God who wrote the desire into your heart would honor that desire and complete it. That the days of unseen work would not feel like nothing. That your children, in the years to come, would understand the floor they walked on. And that you would know, in the quiet moments at 2 a.m., that you are seen.

Never forget it. Torah on the heart.

And to the fathers reading this who are already whole: God bless you. Be a light for the brothers still walking the road.

Not Of This World

John 18:36 Has a Hebraic Spine the Bumper Stickers Missed

The Jehovah’s Witnesses use it to argue Christians should not vote or fight in wars. The t-shirts wear it as a badge of separation. The bumper stickers signal a quiet superiority over worldly concerns. And every popular reading misses what Yeshua actually said when He spoke those words to Pontius Pilate.

“Yeshua answered, ‘My kingship does not derive its authority from this world’s order of things. If it did, my men would have fought to keep me from being arrested by the Judeans. But my kingship does not come from here.’”

John 18:36 (CJB)

How I would read it…

“My throne does not rise up from this ground. If it had been planted in this soil, my men would have drawn their swords against those who came for me, and you would not see me standing here bound. But my throne rises from a different place altogether.”

Let’s unpack this, shall we. 😉

This verse has been used to argue everything from pacifism to imperial conquest, from political quietism to escapist withdrawal. The same nine words have been bent in opposite directions by people equally certain they were quoting Yeshua. That tells you something. A verse that can be made to mean anything has already been stripped of what it actually said.

Let’s give it back its native voice.

The Greek Word Is About Source, Not Location

The Greek preposition Yeshua uses is ek (ἐκ), which means “out of” or “from.” It denotes ORIGIN, not LOCATION. He is not saying “my kingdom is located somewhere other than here.” He is saying “my kingdom does not get its authority FROM here.”

Pilate is standing in front of Him. Pilate represents Roman imperial power. Rome’s authority comes from violence, conquest, hierarchy, military force. When Yeshua says “my kingdom is not OF this world,” He is naming a contrast in SOURCE. His kingdom’s authority does not come from Caesar. It comes from His Father.

That is the contrast. Not heaven versus earth. Caesar versus the Father.

The Kingdom of God in the Tanakh Is Earthly

The Hebrew word for kingdom is malkhut (מַלְכוּת). It is HaShem’s reign, His active sovereign rule. And in the Tanakh, HaShem’s malkhut is profoundly earthly.

Genesis 1: HaShem makes a physical earth, calls it good, gives it to humanity to steward as His vice-regents.

Exodus 19:6: Israel is to be a “kingdom of priests.” On the earth.

Isaiah 2: In the latter days, all nations will flow to Jerusalem to learn Torah. Earthly.

Daniel 7:13-14: The Son of Man is given dominion, glory, and a kingdom that all peoples shall serve. Earthly.

Zechariah 14: HaShem will be king over all the earth, and all nations will go up to Jerusalem to keep Sukkot. Earthly.

The kingdom of HaShem in the prophetic tradition is the restoration of heaven AND earth under HaShem’s reign, with Jerusalem as its center, Torah as its constitution, and Mashiach as its King.

The Lord’s Prayer Is the Key

Yeshua taught His disciples to pray: “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, ON EARTH as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

The kingdom comes. Where? On earth.

Yeshua’s own prayer for His disciples is for the kingdom to invade earth, not for them to escape earth into the kingdom. The direction of motion is heaven-to-earth, not earth-to-heaven.

Revelation Confirms It

The end of the canonical witness is Revelation 21. What happens? The holy city, the New Jerusalem, comes DOWN out of heaven (Revelation 21:2). The dwelling place of HaShem is WITH MEN (21:3). The consummation is not believers going to heaven. It is heaven coming down to earth. The kingdom arrives.

If Yeshua’s kingdom had nothing to do with the earth, the final book of the canon would not end with a city descending onto a renewed earth.

What Yeshua Actually Said

Simply read the verse again with its native voice in place.

“My kingship does not derive its authority from this world’s order of things.”

The kingdom does not get its authority from Caesar. It gets its authority from the Father. The kingdom does not operate by Caesar’s methods. It operates by the Father’s. But the kingdom is absolutely meant to come to earth, to reign over the earth, to restore the earth.

The misreading produces political quietism, escapism, dualism, disengagement from injustice. None of that is in the verse. None of that is in the Tanakh. None of that is in what Yeshua taught His disciples to pray for.

The kingdom is not FROM this world. It is FOR this world. The bumper stickers have been printing the wrong line for two thousand years.

There are 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah. Rabbinic Judaism counted them and built a careful fence around them. Western Christianity counted them too and ran. It has taught for centuries that these laws are invalid.

Both responses miss the entire point.

The Torah is not a rulebook. Yes, there are instructions in it. Yes, there is a submissive posture toward the Maker of the universe that runs throughout the entire Bible, and you ignore it at your peril. But submission is not the point of the Torah. Submission is a posture inside a relationship. The point is the relationship.

The Torah is the only documented direct engagement we have with the God of creation. It is the only sustained record of His own voice given to humanity, in His own words, with His own emphasis, with His own choice of which things to record and which things to leave out. Read that sentence twice. There is no other text in human history that claims this and is taken seriously as such by the largest civilizations to ever exist. The Torah is humanity’s only sustained encounter with HaShem’s own self-disclosure.

That changes everything about how we are supposed to approach it.

It is a love letter. It is the testimony of a Father whose face we have not yet seen, given so we can begin to know who He is. When He tells us to put His words on our heart and on our mind (Deuteronomy 6:6), He is not asking for performance. He is asking for intimacy. He is asking us to know Him the way a son knows the father he loves, not the way a servant memorizes the master’s instructions.

Paul understood this. When he tells the Romans that creation itself testifies of HaShem (Romans 1:20), he is not contradicting the Torah. He is amplifying the same point Moses was making at Sinai. Look around. The sky. The birds. The trees. The whole order of things is shouting at you about who HaShem is. The Torah is the formal verbal disclosure. Creation is the surrounding evidence. Both point to the same Person.

Now look at why each tradition did what it did.

Rabbinic Judaism, fearful of failing the commandments, built a seyag (fence) around the Torah. Layer upon layer of interpretive safeguard designed to make sure no one accidentally breaks a command. The intention is reverent. The effect is that the Person behind the words gets buried under the apparatus that was built to protect the words.

Western Christianity, terrified of legalism, did not build a fence. It burned the letters. It threw out the Father’s own words because someone decided those words were too demanding, replaced the disclosure with a system of doctrines about the disclosure, and then wondered why the relationship felt thin.

Both responses are about submission. The Jewish response wants to succeed at submission. The Western Christian response wants to escape submission. Both reduce the Torah to a question of submission, and both miss what the Torah actually is.

It is not a rulebook. It is a love letter from the Maker of the universe to the humanity He made.

When He tells us to put it on our heart, He is not asking us simply to memorize statutes. He is asking us to come close enough to recognize His voice. To have reverence for Him because we know who He is, not because we have been told to. To obey what He loves because we have come to love what He loves. To know Him the way a son knows a father.

The 613 commandments are not the point. They are the structure of an intimacy that was offered before the structure existed. The Father wrote the letter first. The instructions are inside the letter. Read the letter as a letter, and the instructions will read themselves correctly. Read the letter as an instruction manual, and you will miss everything that matters in it.

That is the warning to the Jewish reader, who knows the letter exists but has covered it with so many fences that the Voice has become muffled.

It is the warning to the Christian reader, who decided the letter no longer applies and has therefore never read what HaShem actually said about Himself.

And it is the warning underneath both. When Yeshua (Jesus) turns people away in Matthew 7, people who were certain they belonged to Him, His words are not “you broke the rules.” His words are “I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of anomia,” which means, in the plainest reading of the Greek, you who lived without Torah. Sit with what He joined together in that one sentence. The charge is Torahlessness. The verdict is a failure of knowing. He does not say they failed an exam. He says there was never a relationship. They had His name in their mouths and had never met Him.

That is what a misfiled letter costs. Read the Torah as a law to be guarded or a law to be escaped, and you can spend an entire life close to it and never once know the One who wrote it. And the most painful thing a person could hear from the Maker of the universe is not “you failed.” It is “I never knew you.”

So this is the invitation to all of us. The category was wrong from the start. The Torah is not the law we were handed. It is the Father introducing Himself. The letter is open. He is still speaking. Read it as a letter. Come and know Him, so that you are never someone He has to say He never knew.

P.S. There is one more thing, and I simply cannot leave out, because it is the most beautiful part.

Listen to what the Father promises in Jeremiah 31. He says a day is coming when He will put His Torah within us and write it on our hearts, and then He says the reason: “they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.” Read that again. The same heart He asked us to lay His words upon, He now promises to write upon Himself. We could not carry Him there on our own, so He says He will do the carrying.

The whole arc closes here. The tragedy of Matthew 7 was a Father saying “I never knew you.” The promise of Jeremiah 31 is the same Father swearing that one day no one will have to say “know HaShem” to anyone, because every last one of them already will.

That is what he is sharing. Not a code to keep. A Father who would rather write Himself onto your heart than leave you guessing about who He is. He gives Himself. That is the whole transaction. He gives Himself!

And this is what should stop every believer cold.

We have held that promise in our hands for twenty-six centuries and simplified it an idea called law. We have hungered for a hundred lesser things and walked past the one document in human history where the Maker of the universe says, in His own voice, I want to be known by you. If we saw it clearly for even one moment, taking it lightly would feel like what it actually is. An atrocity. You do not yawn at a Father offering you His own heart. You weep, and you open the letter with a hunger to know Him at the deepest possible level.

Coming out of corporate marketing at the executive level, this is one of the harder parts of pew life.

Sitting through a pastor elegantly scamming his people.

You learn the schema. The protocols. The subliminal cues. The tactics that move hands toward wallets and call it worship. I learned them inside a $200M business with global reach, partnered with many Fortune 500 logos. Once you see the schema, you cannot unsee it. Especially when someone redeploys it against people who came for the sacred.

So you sit there. Doing everything in your power not to scream.

Honestly? I should have screamed more when I was younger.

I get messages and emails behind the scenes. Quiet ones. The kind that do not make it to the comment section.

After the most recent article, the most powerful one I got was this:

“I’ve been. asking various pastors for 25 years and never understood why Jesus got baptized. Thank you.”

Twenty Five years.

That sentence is the whole reason I do this work.

There is very real contention about whether the New Testament was originally written in Hebrew. Scholars argue. Manuscripts argue. I am not settling that question. What I am telling you is what I see when I read the apostolic writings carefully:

The whole underlying spine is Hebrew. Whether the Greek text we have was composed in Greek first, or translated from Hebrew or Aramaic, or some combination of the three, the conceptual framework, the imagery, the verbs, and the prophetic logic underneath every page are very Hebrew. The covenant categories are Hebrew. The Tanakh is the substrate. The Greek New Testament is a translation of a Hebraic mind into a Greek surface. And if you just step back and take a look at the big picture, it’s 100% Hebraic.

This is why I read Hebraic-first. Not because I am ideological about language. Because the meaning lives deep within the substrate.

Read the deep dive on baptism, The Mikvah Beneath the Water, and you will see what Hebraic-first uncovers. Yeshua (Jesus) is not in the Jordan to remove a sin-debt he never had. He is in the Jordan because that is how a king of Israel is enthroned. The descent to water. The prophet’s voice. The priest’s anointing oil. The people’s acclamation. Solomon at Gihon. David’s son being made king. The pattern is in 1 Kings 1. The fulfillment is in Matthew 3. The reader who had never seen it had no framework for the question. Hebraic-first gives you the framework.

There is a bonus in that article most readers will catch only if they sit with it.

The largest Protestant denomination in the United States, the one whose annual gathering is the biggest religious convention in the world, is built on a false premise about the very rite it is named for. Outward sign of inward decision. That is not what mikvah was. That is what Augustine grafted onto mikvah, fifteen hundred years downstream of the substrate. The Baptist position is not a return to the Bible. It is a partial correction of medieval Catholicism that kept the medieval one-time-event assumption.

It all boils down to human logic. Men did not know when to stop.

This is exactly why HaShem took the seventh day off. He did not need to. He modeled it because we do not. The seventh day is a discipline of cessation. Most of what gets called church history is the opposite discipline. Adding. Refining. Codifying. Drifting one centimeter at a time until the substrate is gone and only the additions remain.

The Bible is counterintuitive. Men’s logic is one of the things it warns against most consistently. If we follow what we think instead of listening to what HaShem said, we end up in false traditions, false doctrines, and false dichotomies.

Almost every reader who sends me a note had been in those false traditions for many years. Hebraic-first there is always the reason behind the messages becoming clarity.

A quick note about something I’ve been quietly building, and a word on why it matters to me.

Most of us were handed the New Testament in English, translated from Greek, and told that was the floor. But Yeshua didn’t think in English. He didn’t think in Greek either. He thought, prayed, argued, taught, and loved in Hebrew, soaked in Torah, in the voice of the prophets, in the rhythms of the Psalms. When you read His words through a Hebrew lens, the text stops being flat. Idioms wake up. Parables click. Hard sayings stop being hard. You start hearing Him as the people standing in front of Him heard Him.

That’s what I mean when I say “Hebraic-first hermeneutic.” It isn’t a clever angle. It’s just refusing to read the Brit Chadashah [New Covenant] as if it fell out of the sky in Athens. It came out of Israel. It speaks Israel.

This is a hot topic on Substack. It is also a hot topic in every small group I have sat in for the last few years, and the conversation always goes the same way. Someone brings up baptism. Someone else asks what it actually is. And then, almost without fail, the room circles to the same starting assumption: that baptism is a New Testament invention, that it started with Yochanan the Immerser (the man you know as John the Baptizer) in the Jordan, that it arrived with Christianity and belongs to Christianity.

It did not.

The practice Yochanan was leading in the Jordan was already centuries old by the time he stood in the water. He was not inventing a new ritual. He was calling Israel back to one Israel had been doing since Sinai, and the misreading of that simple historical fact has shaped most of the arguments believers have about baptism today.

I want to walk this back with you, then put the modern church framing alongside the older one so you can see the gap, and then clear up the top misunderstandings I keep hearing in those small group rooms. At the end, I am going to ask for your help. The deep-dive piece is coming. I want it to answer the questions you actually carry, not the ones I assume you do.

The Quick Walk-Back

In Greek, baptizō (βαπτίζω) is a plain verb. To immerse. To dip. To plunge. You baptize a cloth in dye. You baptize a sinking ship. The word in Apostolic Greek did not arrive draped in religious mystery. It arrived as the action it had always named.

Under the Greek is the Hebrew. Tabal (טבל), to dip, to immerse. And the noun the practice grew up around: mikvah (מקווה), a gathering of water, a ritual immersion pool. The same root names the miqveh ha-mayim of Genesis 1:10, the gathering of the waters at creation. The pool you step into echoes the pool out of which dry land first appeared.

Mikvah was not a niche ritual. It was the built-in plumbing of Tanakh sacred life. Leviticus prescribes immersion before reentering sacred space, multiple times for the high priest on Yom Kippur, after corpse contact. Ezekiel 36:25 holds the prophetic version on HaShem’s own lips: v’zaraqti aleikhem mayim t’horim ut’hartem, “I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean,” paired immediately with v’natati lakhem lev chadash, “and I will give you a new heart.”

By the Second Temple period, archaeologists have surfaced hundreds of mikva’ot in Jerusalem alone. At the Temple Mount entrances. In private homes. In Qumran. Proselyte conversion to Judaism was marked by a mikvah event. When Yochanan stood in the Jordan calling Israel to teshuvah, return, he was operating inside that practice, not outside it. When Yeshua came to him to be immersed, Yeshua was stepping into a Jewish ritual older than the prophets.

That is the substrate. Now look at how the modern church frames it.

What the Church Got Right, and What it Missed

Walk into nearly any contemporary Protestant church website, and the language is remarkably consistent. Baptism is your public declaration and commitment to follow Jesus. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior. Full immersion represents death to sin, burial of the old life, and resurrection to walk in newness of life. Believer’s baptism, made by someone old enough to mean it. Not a magical act that saves you.

A lot of that is true, and the recoveries are worth saying out loud. Believer’s baptism, made consciously, was a real recovery. Full immersion as the proper mode was a real recovery. The disclaimer that the water does not save you by itself was a real correction of a real medieval distortion. The Romans 6 layer, immersion as identification with Messiah’s death and rising, is genuinely there in the Apostolic writings and worth naming.

But under those recoveries is a longer history the modern framing does not name. Look at the church websites again, and notice what is missing. Mikvah is the missing word. Teshuvah is the missing posture. Leviticus is the missing chapter. Yochanan as continuation, not inventor, is the missing fact. The Hebraic substrate the practice grew out of is absent from the entire framing. The story starts at Matthew 3 instead of Leviticus 15, and the practice gets reduced to a personal-decision-with-water instead of recognized as a Jewish teshuvah ritual the Apostles carried forward.

That is the foreshortening the modern church inherited. Not wrong, exactly. Just begun too late, and built on the wrong floor. That is where the misunderstandings come from.

The Top Misunderstandings, Walked Back

If any of these sound like the script you grew up with, you are not alone. Most readers walk in carrying one or more of them.

1. “Baptism started with John the Baptizer.” No. By the time Yochanan was at the Jordan, the practice was already old, already Jewish, already tied to teshuvah and taharah. He was calling Israel back to a posture they had been formed for.

2. “The water saves you.” No. The water marks what HaShem is doing in the heart. It does not perform the work. Teshuvah is the substance; the mikvah names what the teshuvah is.

3. “Baptism is the front door of the church.” No. The institution that came centuries later turned a personal taharah practice into a membership ceremony. Mikvah was never a synagogue franchise application. Baptism marks your turn toward HaShem, not your enrollment in an institution that stands between you and Him.

4. “It is the New Covenant replacement of circumcision.” No. The covenantal-paedobaptist reading flattens brit milah and mikvah into a single covenant-marker theory and loses the texture of each. They were doing different work in the Tanakh, and they are still doing different work.

5. “It is a one-time event that locks in salvation.” No. Mikvah was repeated, often, across a Jewish life. Teshuvah is the work of a lifetime, not a single afternoon.

6. “It is just a public declaration that I follow Jesus.” Partially right, dangerously incomplete. Yes, the witness is part of the form, because the turn is being declared. But reducing the rite to a personal-decision-with-water strips it of the Hebraic teshuvah substrate the practice grew out of. The water is doing more than testifying to your decision. It is naming a return HaShem has been working in you, inside a lineage older than the prophets.

What Baptism Actually Is

A continuation of the mikvah lineage. A public teshuvah, an outward marking of an inward turn. The water names the turn; HaShem does the turning. Halakhic tradition preferred mayim chayim, “living water,” running water from a flowing source, because the rite was meant to point at the source of cleansing, not the medium. The witness of the community is part of the form, because the turn is being declared, not negotiated.

For those of us in the Brit Chadashah, immersion also identifies with Messiah, his death and his rising. That layer is real. But the layer underneath, the Hebraic one, is older and prior: a person stepping into water that pools where waters gather, marking with the body what HaShem has been doing in the heart.

Now I Want to Hear from You

The Gospel

There is a marriage almost no one names from the pulpit, and you are inside it.

Your spouse rarely gives you affection that is not a transaction. The hugs come with strings. The I-love-yous come with stacked conditions. The good days come when you have produced what the unspoken contract requires. The rest of the time, you are being measured.

You have read every book. You have attended every retreat. You have prayed every prayer your tradition taught you. The dynamic has not changed. You are tired in a way sleep does not touch.

The new piece, Whole Before You Stay, is for you. It is for the husband whose wife runs the home through criticism and cold withdrawal. It is for the wife whose husband requires constant management of his moods to get through a normal afternoon. The high-conflict pattern is not a gendered diagnosis. It runs through both. The faithful spouse on either side carries the same exhaustion.

This essay does not tell you whether to stay or walk. It does something harder and more useful. It tells you that you cannot ask that question yet, not honestly, not safely, not in a way that will produce wisdom on the other side. Before stay-or-walk is even an honest question, something else has to be settled first.

You have to be whole before either answer is yours to give.

The Hebrew word for that wholeness is shalem. It is the adjective form of shalom. Where shalom names the condition of peace and completeness, shalem names the person who carries that completeness inside their own frame. Undivided. Whole in themselves before Hashem, not because the world around them is at peace, but because their interior is no longer outsourced.

A person who is shalem is a person whose center of gravity does not live inside another human being. That is the gate. The faithful spouse in a high-conflict marriage cannot answer the stay-or-walk question while their center of gravity lives inside the high-conflict spouse. Whatever answer comes out will be a reaction. It will be a flinch. The pendulum swinging away from pain.

The piece walks four moves. It asks you to see your spouse honestly: they did not get that way alone. It asks you to take a strong self-position with the Lord that does not depend on them for anything. It draws the line where boundaries end and abuse begins, and tells you what wisdom looks like at that line. And it brings you to the reliance the whole essay has been pointing toward, the one that makes everything else possible.

There is also a section on the children, and it names something most pastoral writing skips. In a high-conflict marriage, the children will very often draw toward the high-conflict spouse, the dramatic parent, the loud one whose mood fills the room. You will be standing right there doing the harder work, and they will not see it. Not yet. The piece tells you what to do with that grief, and why your steadiness is still the thing they need most, even when it is currently invisible to them.

The closing line of the essay is the lesson under all the lessons. No matter what happens in your world, as long as you have complete teshuvah and restoration with Hashem, the rest of it does not matter. Use common sense. Protect your well-being. Protect the well-being of your children. But the foundation you stand on is not the marriage and not the spouse. It is Hashem.

If you are inside this kind of marriage, the essay will name what you have been living without language for. If you are not, the essay will help you see someone you love with eyes you did not have before.

We have all heard the altar call.

Me too. I raised my hand more than once. I walked forward more than once. (especially when I went to Calvary Chapel’s) For a season, that cadence was where I first said yes, and I will not pretend otherwise. I grew up inside it.

I have walked a longer road since then, and I simply want to say what I so clearly see now.

We are living in a time and place in the age to come. The reign of the Father is already breaking into the earth. What this moment needs is more than another altar call. It needs people actually in relationship with God. Covenant relationship. The kind that changes how you parent, how you love, how you work, how you carry grief.

I am not saying that to be arrogant. I am saying it because it is true.

So there is a new page on my site. It is called The Gospel. There is a button to it on the home page.

Push it and you land on a permanent page I wrote for one reason: to hand someone the actual thing. Not the marketing. Not the pitch. Not the transaction. Just what the Hebrew Bible promised, what Yeshua lived, and what the Apostles wrote into the record.

Here is what it says, shortened….

The Gospel is not a transaction. It is a covenant.

YHWH, the Father Yeshua called Abba, has been pursuing His people from the garden of Eden onward. He promised through Jeremiah that He would put His Torah on the human heart, forgive iniquity, remember sin no more, and dwell with His people as their God. Yeshua did not come to start a new religion. He came to open that covenant. His death was not a payment to an angry deity. It was the One who holds the covenant walking into the very thing that broke it, so the way home could be reopened forever.

What He offers is not a postcard from the afterlife. Heaven is real. Union with the Father is real. But He is not waiting until then. He offers you a whole life without the stress you were never meant to carry. Right now.

If it is on your heart, read it. Slowly. Unhurried.

This is the most important part of doctrine we need to understand. If it is on your heart, share it. Send it to the friend who asks you questions at midnight and never gets answers that fit. The page will not move. It stays at that URL as long as I am writing.

If you push back on penal substitutionary atonement in any evangelical conversation, here is what happens. Someone reaches for a verse. They say, “But what about Isaiah 53? What about Romans 3? What about 2 Corinthians 5:21?” The verses get quoted as if quoting them ends the discussion. They do not end the discussion. They open it. Because every single one of these verses, when you read it in the language it was given in, says something different from what your pastor told you it said.

This week’s essay walks five verses, one at a time. For each verse: the verse quoted the way you have heard it, the PSA claim stated plainly, and what the original language actually says.

Isaiah 53:4-6. The Hebrew preposition for “wounded for our transgressions” is min, which is causal, not substitutionary. Hebrew has a substitutionary preposition available (tachat, used in Genesis 22:13 when the ram is offered in place of Isaac), and Isaiah does not use it.

Romans 3:25. The Greek word translated “propitiation” is hilastērion. In the Septuagint, that exact word is used twenty-one times to translate one specific Hebrew word: kapporet, the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. Sha’ul is not announcing a new theological category called wrath-satisfaction. He is saying Yeshua is the new mercy seat. The cross is not the new courthouse. It is the new Holy of Holies.

2 Corinthians 5:21. The Greek word translated “sin” is hamartia. In the Septuagint, hamartia is the standard technical translation for the Hebrew chatat, the sin offering. Read with the Levitical meaning: “He made Him to be a sin offering for us.” The verse is no longer about God treating Yeshua as if He were morally sin. It is about Yeshua becoming the new purification offering.

Galatians 3:13. The curse here is Deuteronomy 21:23, the ceremonial shame of public execution, not divine wrath transferred to a substitute. The Greek verb for “redeemed” is exagorazō, marketplace language for buying a slave out of slavery. Liberation, not punishment-transfer.

1 John 2:2. The Greek word translated “propitiation” is hilasmos, same root as Romans 3:25. Modern English translations split: ESV and NASB use “propitiation,” NRSV and NET correctly use “atoning sacrifice.” This is a translation question, not a textual one. The Greek does not demand PSA. The translators imported PSA into the English.

Every single one of these verses can be read in the Hebraic-Levitical frame of purification, rescue, and restoration. None of them require the Anselmian frame. The text has been telling you the truth the whole time. The translation has been telling you something else.

This is why we are Berean. This is why we do the work. The text is more beautiful than the doctrine. It always has been.

You have heard “once saved, always saved” your whole Christian life. The phrase is true. The framework that produced it is not. And the difference is the whole relationship.

Salvation is not a ticket. It is not a legal verdict. It is not a stamp on your eternal passport. It is not a moment you walked an aisle, signed a card, or prayed a prayer at the back of a chapel because the music was right. Salvation is rescue. That is all the word has ever meant in the language it was given in. The Hebrew root is yasha, to deliver, to pull out of danger. The noun form is yeshuah, the rescue HaShem provides. Yeshua’s own name is literally “YHWH rescues.”

The church took a word that described a drowning man being pulled out of the water and turned it into a receipt. It took a word that described chains falling off a prisoner and turned it into a membership card. And then it told you that if you got the spreadsheet right, you were in. And if you got it wrong, you were out. And you have spent your entire Christian life wondering whether you got it right.

You were asking the wrong question.

This week’s essay walks the parable of the Prodigal Son as Yeshua’s own answer to the OSAS question. The father who runs. The father who interrupts the rehearsed speech. The father who reinstates a son who never stopped being a son. And the elder brother, who never left the house and never enjoyed it, because he was too busy keeping score. He is penal substitutionary atonement in human form. The whole framework, embodied.

What “once saved, always saved” actually means: HaShem will never let go of you. The grip is permanent. The watching never stops. You cannot lose your salvation the way you lose your keys, because it was never a possession. But you can walk away from the relationship the way the younger son walked away. The leaving is real. It costs you. Coming home does not re-earn anything. It reactivates a life that was always available.

The Father is at the end of the road right now, looking for the shape of you on the horizon.

Good morning,

Tomorrow is Easter. And I’m not writing to correct anything about that. I’m writing because I love you, and because I believe what you’re celebrating is even more beautiful than you may realize.

Most of us grew up with Easter as an event. A sunrise service. A hymn about the empty tomb. And that matters, it truly does. The resurrection of Yeshua is the hinge of history. But I want to invite you to see something deeper. Not instead of what you already hold, but beneath it. The foundation.

The Table Was Set Long Before

Centuries before that weekend in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), the God of Avraham (Abraham) gave His people a meal. Pesach, Passover. A lamb without blemish. Blood on the doorposts. Unleavened bread broken in haste. A cup lifted in the night.

This wasn’t just history. It was prophecy enacted, a living picture of what was coming.

When Yeshua (Jesus) sat with His talmidim (disciples) at that last Seder (Passover meal), He didn’t invent something new. He reached into the oldest story His people knew and said: This is what it was always about. This bread, my body. This cup, the New Covenant in my blood.

He wasn’t replacing the meal. He was revealing what the meal had always meant.

The Brit Chadashah, New Covenant: Not a Replacement, The Fulfillment

The prophet Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) spoke of a day when HaShem (God) would make a brit chadashah (new covenant) with the house of Yisra’el (Israel):

“I will put My Torah (instruction) within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”Yirmeyahu / Jeremiah 31:33

Notice what’s new: not the Torah itself, but where it lives. Not on stone. On the heart. The covenant isn’t a departure from everything that came before. It’s the destination everything was walking toward.

When Yeshua lifted that third cup at the Seder, the Kos Ge’ulah, the Cup of Redemption, and said “This is the new covenant in my blood”, He was declaring: This is what Yirmeyahu saw. This is what Pesach has been pointing to for a thousand years. It’s here.

This is precisely why Yeshua came. Not to start a religion. Not to give us a set of beliefs to check off. He came to enact this covenant.

And yet, somehow, the modern church has largely missed it. We celebrate His death and resurrection without understanding what He was sealing when He sealed it. He came to write Torah on hearts. He came to bind God and His people together in a way that could never be undone. He came to restore human intimacy with Himself.

What I Would love for You to See

I’m not asking you to stop celebrating. I’m asking you to celebrate more.

Not just an event, but a covenant. Not just a moment in history, but the fulfillment of a promise spoken over your life before you were born. When that bread is broken, know that it echoes back to Matzah (unleavened bread) eaten in faith on the night of deliverance. When that cup is lifted, know that it carries the weight of redemption. Not just from Mitzrayim (Egypt), but from everything that has ever held you captive.

The resurrection isn’t a standalone miracle. It is the seal on a covenant. It is HaShem (God) saying: I keep My promises. Death could not hold what I covenanted to give you.

A Challenge for This Weekend

Here’s what I want to ask you, and I mean this as a friend, not a teacher:

When was the last time you really thought about covenant?

Not as a theological word. Not as something you heard in a sermon once. But as the thing that holds your entire life together.

We don’t talk about covenant in the modern church. Not really. We talk about relationship. We talk about faith. We talk about grace. But covenant, the binding, blood-sealed, I-am-not-leaving kind of promise, that word has almost disappeared from our vocabulary. And I think that’s why so much feels fragile.

Think about your marriage. What holds it together on the hard days, the days when feelings are thin and the house is quiet in the wrong way? It’s not romance. It’s covenant. It’s the decision that was made before witnesses, before God, that said: I am binding myself to you, and I will not walk away. That’s not a contract. A contract protects you if things go wrong. A covenant says: I will stay and make things right.

Think about your children. Parenting is exhausting. There are seasons when you pour out and pour out and nothing seems to come back. But you don’t leave. You don’t quit. Why? Because something deeper than emotion holds you to them. That’s covenant, the kind that says you are mine, and I am yours, and nothing will change that.

Now think about Yeshua.

He didn’t offer us a transaction. He didn’t say, “Believe the right things and I’ll let you in.” He sat at a table, broke bread, lifted a cup, and said: This is a covenant. In my blood. For you. That is the language of permanence. Of binding. Of a God who chose you before you chose Him, and sealed it with His own life.

This weekend, I’m challenging you: dig into this. Read Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 31. Read the Pesach (Passover) account in Shemot (Exodus) 12. Read what Yeshua said at that table in Luke 22. And ask yourself: What changes in my life if I stop treating my faith like a relationship I can drift in and out of, and start treating it like a covenant that was cut on my behalf?

What changes in your marriage? In your parenting? In the way you show up for the people God has put in your life?

Covenant is not a word for theologians. It’s the word for anyone who has ever promised to stay.

A Blessing for You

So wherever you are this weekend, whether you call it Easter, whether you call it Pesach, whether you’ve never thought about the connection, receive this:

You are loved by a God who set a table for you before the foundation of the world. A God who wrote the ending into the beginning. A God whose covenant is not fragile, not conditional on your understanding of it, but written on your very heart.

The phrase Ruach HaKodesh (רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ) appears three times in the entire Tanakh (Hebrew Bible). Three times. Psalm 51:13. Isaiah 63:10. Isaiah 63:11. That is the entire Old Testament foundation for the doctrine that became the third person of the Trinity.

The word ruach means wind, breath, spirit — all three at once. Hebrew does not force you to pick one. And when the Tanakh says Ruach YHWH or Ruach Elohim, the grammar works the same way as yad YHWH — the hand of God. Nobody argues that the hand of God is a separate person. But we did exactly that with the breath.

This week’s Unpacking traces how that happened.

The short version: the Septuagint translators rendered ruach into Greek as pneuma — a word that had been living in Stoic philosophy for centuries, carrying connotations of impersonal cosmic substance rather than personal, covenantal breath. Then the Cappadocian Fathers in the fourth century applied the Greek word hypostasis — “underlying reality” — to formally define the Spirit as a distinct person within the Godhead. A word with no Hebrew equivalent in this usage. A concept the Tanakh never proposes.

The breath became an entity. And the Hebrew text was never consulted.

The full essay walks through every major Ruach passage from Genesis 1:2 through Acts 2 and shows the same pattern the Greek categories obscure: the Ruach is HaShem Himself — His consciousness, His presence, His breath reaching into the world to create, commission, raise the dead, and write Torah on hearts. It never acts independently. It never speaks about HaShem as though it were a separate party. It is God, breathing.

The essay also examines what this means for the songs we sing without thinking — how two of the most popular worship songs in modern Christianity operate on theological assumptions that are direct descendants of the Cappadocian formula. And it looks directly at the Pentecostal question: what happens when you measure tongues and “being slain in the Spirit” against the actual Hebrew text and the actual words of Sha’ul (Paul) in 1 Corinthians 14.

The answer is uncomfortable. And it needs to be said.

If the Ruach HaKodesh is not a third person but HaShem’s own conscious presence, then salvation is not a transaction where you receive an entity. It is the Creator of the universe turning His face toward you and breathing until you stand.

Genesis 2:7. Ezekiel 37. Acts 2. Same pattern. Same God. Same breath.

I watched this conversation with an AI safety researcher — Dr. Roman Yampolskiy — who predicts that within a few years, most of us won’t be able to function without algorithmic guidance. Superintelligence replacing jobs, mediating truth, shaping ethics. The whole picture.

And my first thought wasn’t about robots or timelines. It was about Sunday morning.

Because what he’s describing — a system where someone else processes truth for you and hands you the clean version — we already built that.

We’ve been sitting in it for centuries. We called it church. We replaced darash (the hard, personal, sweaty work of seeking God in His Word) with a chair and a sermon.

We traded covenant responsibility for comfortable consumption.

AI doesn’t have to displace Scripture. We already did that when we decided Torah was optional and grace meant we didn’t have to do the work anymore.

You’ve seen the image ten thousand times.

A slender ring of thorns. A bowed head. Drops of blood, tastefully rendered.

Here’s what I need you to sit with: that image is not in the text.

The Gospels tell you the thorn-crown existed. Matthew 27, Mark 15, John 19 — all three place it on his head inside a mock-coronation sequence that included flogging, a purple robe, a reed scepter, repeated blows to the head, and soldiers kneeling in staged mockery of a king.

They do not give you a diagram.

The circular wreath is a Byzantine and Renaissance iconographic tradition. Not a biblical claim. Which raises a question most people have never thought to ask: what if it was something more engulfing than a ring? What if the thorn structure covered more of the head — more like a helmet — and the devotional image we’ve inherited is smaller than what actually happened?

That question is the door to something much larger.

Unpacking #13 reads the crucifixion forensically. It works through the Greek word stephanos, Roman military ridicule, Tacitus, Josephus, the archaeological remains of a first-century crucifixion victim, and the fractured crowd at Golgotha that most Christian preaching flattens into a single emotional bloc.

And then it goes somewhere else entirely — into Leviticus and Jeremiah 31, where the cross stops being a symbol and starts being a covenant event. The deepest, bloodiest, most misread covenant event in history.

I’m sending this before Tuesday’s article drops because I want to be clear, and I also want to say it gently.

If you’ve ever heard “you’re robbing God” aimed at your wallet, you already know this isn’t just a Bible topic. It hits people in the gut. It can make sincere believers feel nervous around God.

I’ve watched the offering moment become a pressure moment. I’ve watched good people do spiritual math in their heads—wondering if heaven is going to punish them for being broke. I’ve watched families carrying debt feel like they’re disobeying God because they can’t keep up.

That fear doesn’t produce generosity. It produces anxiety. And anxiety makes people easy to manage.
