One thing: I hope that you’ll explain the apparent multiple tithes, and who benefits from them. Especially the needy fatherless, widows, sojourners and Levites!! My take is we don’t share enough of our “Western” wealth with the majority world.
I appreciated how you kept pulling the conversation back to context...covenant, audience, purpose, rather than slogans. The point about language doing quiet damage (“tithe,” “storehouse,” “obedience”) really landed, as did your handling of the widow’s mite. Seeing that passage not as a fundraising ideal but as an exposure of a system that consumes the vulnerable reframes it in a sobering way.
When my husband and I became Christians, it was during “giving”season in the south. A lot of pressure. I remember driving down a road and asking God what to do. I was scared to tithe because I grew up poor but wanted to be obedient.
Two days later my husband came home from work. Long story short, he got an 18% pay raise that day. Eighteen percent, not ten. We started tithing and have not once looked back. We now tithe to charities, and it is a true blessing to be a blessing to orphans, the elderly, hospice, etc. God is faithful 💕
I feel clean, because the Lord and I talked it out and I am giving what I want to give—at this point it is well over 10%. It makes me happy to be able to do it. And this is a man who has two bankruptcies in my past. My advice is to ask the Lord. "I want to give XX%, Is this a problem?" Because that is the bottom line. Is the Lord going to be pleased by your giving? Is it actually a form of worship?
