it has been my understanding that John Newton wrote the body of the song after God convicted him that the slave trade was evil and he became an abolitionist. He turned away from it. Just because a captain holds religious services for the men on the ship does not mean that he was a believer himself at that time. If he abused women. He obviously was not yet following Christ. I was taught that he repented and tried to stop the trade. Nevertheless less, white traders were buying slaves from black traders.
